It is now official. CERN has now reported a 4.9 sigma statistical significance on the existence of the higgs boson. This is so fucking huge. Almost the next big thing since e=mc2. Thought I'd share it with you lads. Although not many of you might be interested.

Awesome isn't it, but isnt it an observation of a sub atomic particle that seems to be a Higgs Boson than an out right confirmation of Higgs Boson? In the end it probably will be but they need more data. Proper sci-fi shit going on, fair play to Switzerland and other members for funding such things and not wasting the money on pointless, illegal wars and stuff.

Thanks for posting redcase. Very interested in this. Been following it in the papers since it was first reported, although my physics isn't quite up to scratch. Anyone care to shed light on the God particle? How will it help us understand the existence of matter? And is there any practical use of this knowledge?

My basic understanding is that the Higgs Boson sub atomic particle is responsible for mass in all particles. Physics wasn't able to explain why things had mass until it was theorised in the 60's. The discovery means our theories were right and we wont have to throw out our standard model of understanding of the universe. I believe we had to have the LHC to be able to find it and it seems its about a 99.9% chance we have.

Cheers ginger ! Well I am a biology major so I do not know much about it myself, but from what I can gather, the Higgs boson is THE particle that imparts mass to the proton. So basically, I don't know if the analogy fits, without higgs boson, things would be flying around at light speeds or maybe even more. Very crude layman representation. This is the most ground-breaking event in particle physics in the last 50-60 years. And possibly will shape the future. Apparently time travel and teleportation can become a possibility now as a consequence of discovering the higgs boson ! Fletch, absolutely right mate ! Astute observation ! I had missed that. It is indeed a particle that satisfies all conditions of being a higgs boson although doesn't fit standard model higgs boson theory just yet. But as pointed out by the researchers, it is all in very early level research stage and will take much more research. BUT. and this is a very important but, the fact that there has been the discovery of a new sub-atomic particle. In fact. THE MOTHER OF ALL SUBATOMIC PARTICLES. Is very very real. Ladies and gentlemen, god is a particle.

Aye but theoretically I coulD win the lottery this weekend, doesn't mean I'll put 10k on it to chance it. Although will smith did it, must have had some nerves to jump off that building fair play to him.

The fact that air contains oxygen is theory. Liverpool winning the league next season is probability (Even lesser than you betting 10k on the lottery and winning .

Let's refer to it as the 'Giggs Boson' please.

How the fuck are they going to prove this exists...!!
It's a bit like your best mate getting a round of drinks in, you've never seen it happen..!! lol.
