The issue is a unified team, not the selection of players. Concern would be FIFA/UEFA (less likely) then turning 'round a nd saying, 'Well, you are one team for the Olympics why can't you be one team for all international football?' It always seem this issue has an expiration date. Surely these countries will combine or split properly one day. Thats been an issue for years concerning GB as a nation. Going off the football issue or topic if you look at Rugby Union in World Cups you have England, Scotland, Wales representing GB, not Northern Ireland but Ireland as a separate nation. Yet you have a Rugby Union British & Irish Lions team playing in International touring matches or tests. Rugby League has a GB side entering in World Cups, and International matches as the British Lions. Confusing I know but cricket is gradually going down that path. You have England as a cricket team that plays in the 20 overs and 50 overs World Cups and now Ireland has a team and so does Scotland? I have more than likely got that wrong somewhere but someone like Stew or Bestie will explain better about Ireland/Northern Ireland. Back too football. I remember years ago that a lot of European clubs were asking the question how can GB put teams into the European and World Cup competitions with 4 nation representing them, they should have a Great Britain side. I can understand that really as what I said above. Rugby League has a Great Britain side? Now we have the Olympics and the same issue.

As I understand it - apart from the other home nations hating England and the attendant arrogance - is that currently, the home nations have 4 votes with FIFA. They are concerned that if GB team were formed then FIFA would use that as an excuse to cut 4 votes down to one.
