to be honest at his age he should be getting caught out of position less. he is very experienced and i cant understand where the perfect blend of attack and defense has gone from him. now he just attacks and thinks less about defending. top top player but needs to get his balance back

Nail on the head Stewart.
He has also started to stand off his man a bit too much, maybe he needs the extra yard due to fatigue, im not sure but he needs to get closer and stop crosses coming in.

You can read too much into stats. Like Stew said, he gets caught out of position far too often for a top left back. I, and most United fans, can see that with our own eyes, we don't need stats. Rafael gets far more stick for that than Evra, when Evra is the experienced one that should no longer be doing that.
I firmly believe, but I would be interested in seeing actual evidence to prove it, that most of the goals we conceded last season came from his side of the pitch. It just seemed like we never had a left back for most of the season - it was like we had two left wingers.
Evra - you're a top quality player, so sort it out.

My Evra theory is that his perfomances have started dipping when we sold Ronaldo, insofar as Evra was probably assigned to mark Ronnie in training matches, and that obviously kept his performances at a very high level.

This may well be true. Makes sense. In other news, have we confirmed this guy or what? Also, the sleeve tattoo down the left-arm screams 'scumbag', but hopefully he's a good lad with poor taste. Not dissing tattoos by the way, just on footballers there is an automatic 'tosser-facter' with most guys who get those sorts of tats.

I agree with that, its been an open invitation for 18 months now. Interesting theory Tatty. That would keep anyone on their toes. I had it down to fatigue and a lack of serious competition, the guy plays far too much, we could try sticking a few Duracell up his arse?

Any ideas why his move to Southampton fell through?

Any ideas why his move to Southampton fell through? De Gelderlander report that Büttner was previously set for a move to Southampton – who failed to hold on to a 2-1 lead at Manchester City earlier today – but the move fell through after the Saints refused to pay an extra instalment on the transfer. Some third party ownership issue.

Is this first player we've signed who has a full blown sleeve? Odd thing to ask, but there's a lot of tattoos in football now. I know Berbs, Rooney, Nani, Tony V have forearm tattoos and Bebe I think may have a few himself. But this guy has a lot.
I'm glad they'll be some competition for Paddy, long needed. Hopefully he has the base talent and he'll come on leaps and bounds in the United way of playing and training and he's still young.

Dutch defender Alexander Buttner's transfer from Vitesse Arnhem to Manchester United moved a step closer on Monday when he flew to England for a medical with the Premier League club. Buttner, 23, would become United's second recent Dutch acquisition following Robin van Persie's move from Arsenal to Old Trafford last week. The player, who had been linked with possible moves to Queens Park Rangers, Fulham and Southampton, told reporters before leaving Schipol Airport in Amsterdam for Manchester that he was hoping the United deal would be completed soon. "If a week ago, you told me that together with Robin van Persie I would be playing at Manchester United, I would have driven you straight to the madhouse," he said. "One month ago Manchester United sent an email expressing their interest, but in the last four days it became concrete. "I have not spoken yet with Sir Alex Ferguson, but if all goes well that will happen." Buttner was included in a provisional Netherlands squad for Euro 2012, but did not make the final 23. He has made 107 appearances for Arnhem, scoring 10 times.

Hmm. He seems to be very shocked by his transfer. I hope he doesn't turn out like Gabby Obitan.
