Manchester United are to complete the signing of Mexican international Hector Herrera by this weekend, reports emerging from Italy suggest.
The 22-year-old midfielder, who was part of the Mexico side that won Olympic gold in this summer’s London 2012 games, had been scouted by Manchester United, Liverpool and Serie A side Udinese, but Italian agency calciomercato report that Sir Alex Ferguson is poised to bring the highly rated Mexican to Old Trafford in the very near future.
Last week Mexico’s largest sports publication El Universal reported that Liverpool and Manchester United had scouted the Pachuca midfielder who started in Mexico’s gold-medal winning victory over Brazil in the Olympics football final. Club president Andres Fassi, revealed the interest emanating from the Premier League, but expressed his desire to keep the player at the Mexican club.
While there has no been no comment on the player from the Manchester United contingent, calicomercato explain that a deal for the player is all but agreed, but Liverpool remain hopeful of convincing the player to move to Anfield. Udinese had previously been favourites to land the exciting midfielder, before the Premier League giants intervened.
Following the arrival of Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell, Robin Van Persie became United’s third signing of this transfer window last week. Last night it emerged that a move for another Dutchman was also nearing completion, with 23-year-old left back Alexander Buttner of Vitesse Arnhem closing in on a move to Old Trafford, where he is expected to act as an understudy to Patrice Evra. Should United conclude a deal for Herrera by the weekend, it would cap a week period of swift business by Sir Alex Ferguson.
