whilst am in favor of a fluid front 4, I cant see the gaffer shunting Rooney out wide.. Without the ball Rooney is crucial in defending which Kags won't be upto it for some more time atleast. Back then different formation and tactics based on possession which reduced the defensive responsibilities of front players. The potential of our current crop of attackers is scary. I wish we had a competent assman to make them tick as a unit.. Or perhaps I need more patience and wait until next season

Yeah, that's why he scored from out wide on the left yesterday. He played there for about 15 minutes. Anyone remember the Cluj game at OT.

If you had said not as effective, pretty much everyone would agree with you. We all prefer him in the middle. But you said crap, which just isn't true. He's proved really effective there for us in the past, particularly when we had Ronaldo at the club.
Unless your interpretation of the word crap is 'less likely to score'.

Kagawa's got a tough job on his hands, as his best position is Rooney's position. The Rooney/RvP partnership is alot like Dortmund's Kagawa/Lewandowski duo from last season. Kagawa looks a little bit lost outwide and in the very middle of midfield, as he's not a tricky dribbler nor is he a box to box type. I think Fergie intended to play him just behind Rooney, as he was bought early in the summer, and then the chance that RvP would actually be availabe became much more realistic, and that sort of nullified Kagawa's arrival. But still, he's a quality player, and he offers us something no other United player does. I'd like to see him get a run of games as a concrete 90 minute starter to show us what he can do. He's only hat fits and spurts of chances, and usually been brought off at the hour marker, so he's never built up any momentum with us. He's slowly improving with the time he's had, and he's still young, so I don't think we will see the very best of him until next season. What he needs to boost him is an important goal. Netting against City or Chelsea would immediately make him a hero, and he could build from there.

onlytwodasilvas Spot on.I think he could become a big player for us but I feel we wont see the best of him until we get a new Assistant. Our tactics under Phelan are archaic, CQ would have this team set up and playing much better IMO.I just hope Shinji doesnt become another square peg like Veron. We wont see the best of him out wide left, a posistion he doesnt really like( manunitedonly.com/shinji-kagawa-to-drive-on-the-left-as-honda-fills-the-hole/3889) or in CM, were he lacks both the physique and aggression to play in a midfield 2.

Carrick- - - - - Jones - - - - - - Clevers - - - - - - - - - - - Kagz - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - RVP - - - - - - - - - - Wazza - - - - -
I'd be interested to see something like that, the midfield personnel can obviously change depending on circumstance but an interchanging front three like that could work wonders, though we'd have absolutely no width. It's a bit of a conundrum, perhaps he'll simply be expected to adapt to playing wider? He plays there for Japan so It's not unthinkable.

I think his only option is to hope Rooney is sold (which no sane United fan would want) so he can play in his favoured position, or adapt to playing in a more David Silva sort of role, coming in off the left. If we had Rooney, Kagawa and Nani behind Robin, then those 3 (or even those 4) are all capable of playing with fluidity, tucking in, filling in the space and playing with freedom rather than a disciplined left midfield, centre midfield, right midfield, striker. Nani usually does whatever Nani wants anyway, and Rooney is often covering ever blade of grass possible, often drifting outwide when needed, allowing Kagawa to tuck in. I think the modern game, where formations are pretty meaningless these days, adapting, and being able to play in more than one position is crucial. I don't think you can spent £15million on a footballer who can use the excuse "I can only play in suchandsuch". Sure, it's his best position, but I'm sure he could attack from the flanks as well, without being an all-out winger.

I think he is wasted on the wing is what I should have said.

He grabbed 2 assists apparently, here's the second. Lovely first time ball.
