If it has helped him with the athletic side of his game then isn't that performance enhancing? If he wasn't athletic then he wouldn't be much good - and would surely succumb to more injuries and such? it is indeed

Jimbo, I would really like to help you out - not that I totally agree with you, but we have some similar points, but I think I have repeated myself too many times to be bothered yeah i know what u mean. the fact is that it's all above board, the authorities have no problem with it, it shouldn't be an issue for anyone.

I've got no words that I could fit within the 60000 available to explain why that is not a very good excuse

@ carbs: so we can expect a book then?
@ Jim: i totally understand what u mean about it not being an issue because of it being a matter of public record. question is had, lets say Abidal, needed to take HGH or steroids to mitigate the effect of his Cancer treatment, but after taking it, he actually came back stronger than before he became ill, would we be equally as dismissive of the effects? considering it was a genuine medical need that the HGH/steroids were taken.

You know what else is deemed 'above board'?
Blatter systematically making sure he had no rivals to re-election.
The Russian World Cup bid.
Zeke Fryers' transfer to Spurs.
The Glazer's. The Arabs. Abramovich. Venky's.

If it is to save a life - it is not the same as intentionally doping yourself to make you stronger. Furthermore, this is quite a different case - Messi underwent treatment when he was a boy, at a critical age. He stopped treatment once the hormonal levels are adequate, before adulthood. He did not dope. His body, theoretically, just grew to the size it would normally do without the disease. This is assuming there is no ploy in the first place, and that Messi's condition was real and of some danger to his health. In Abidal's example - it would be considered as a medical treatment. Additionally, I assume he does not need to constantly take "hormones" after he beat Cancer, so the effects will wear off with time. The gist is this - do YOU consider these scenarios enhancing when you're using medication as what it is created to do? - To save lives? To aid in fighting disease and death? @ Carbonara, was that directed at me too?

To aid in fighting disease and death? im only musing here as i dont know with any certainty that this is possible, but if as a result of using the steroids/HGH for genuine medical (life saving) purposes leads to an athlete gaining an abnormal physical quirk/advantage. then yes Alantas, i think that is unfair. it comes full circle to the Lance Armstrong thing (and in know some people dont like the Messi/Armstrong comparison) but many at the time cried foul that Lance was gaining an unfair advantage by using the steroids after his cancer treatment back in the 90's. he was given a pass because of his medical status, and the general public feeling was that he was ok to use it because of the cancer. however as an athlete, they train all of the time. sometimes it is the training that gets them over the hump of their illness. how long after you stop taking these drugs, for legitimate use, is it still in their system working? they would be training all of the time, surely it gives them a slight advantage having the remnants of the drugs in their system between the end of treatment and their eventual return to their sport. the time that they would be training to get fit.

It comes down to this:
Would Messi be the same player now as he would have been without the drugs?
We will never know, but the answer is probably not. The sad thing is, I can't say that without being labelled a Messi hater.
