I remember coming on here after watching Wilshere playing for Bolton when we played them away and raving about him.
My problem has never been with the high-billing of Wilshere, but the complete willingness to write one of our own youth prospects off in comparison.

Schweinsteiger, Vidal, Gotze. Not many, but there is a few. Schweinsteiger is entirely the wrong bracket. If united spend £40mill+ on a midfielder I highly doubt it'll be some one close to 30. When you look at those CM who are the top players currently most are close too or past 30. What I'm talking about is spending a lot on a player who could potentially have a very long career here, which covers over the initial outlay (take Rooney or Rio for example). In that regard there's not that many other top targets around. Vidal maybe, but he wouldn't be necessarily cheaper. Of those younger there only a handful I can think, maybe the likes of Gundogen or one of the Benders. And the likes of Gotze or Thiago, I'm not so sure they'd be comfortable in 2 man midfield in the premier league. So in that regard what I see is young midfielder with as much natural ability as anyone around at his age, whose premier league proven and could in theory become a key part of our midfield for a decade. In the one gaping hole in our squad. As I said previously, no doubt Arsenal wouldn't want to sell. But lets face it while he out injured they sold 4 of their best players anyway. I'm sure United could turn his head and as I said, give Arsenal an offer they cant refuse.

Taken in proportion with your hype for Wilshere. I already said that right there, in my post.

still nonsense. if i'm United manager and i bring in Wilshere then nothing changes with Cleverley. i'm not looking to sell him or put him out with the stiffs. i'd continue to utilise him, not dissimilar to how Ferguson does it himself - not in the side every week, but gets plenty of football. so no, i'm not writing him off in comparison with anyone. i argued with you that wilshere was the better player of the two but so what. still not writing him off.

Schweinsteiger, Vidal, Gotze. Not many, but there is a few. You have to factor in his age, Wilshire has just turned 21, he could surpass all them by the time he is 25. Saying that though, I wouldn't take Vidal over him even now.. I think Gotze could probably reach the same level as him albeit in a different position, but currently, I'd still take Wilshire. Schweinsteiger is the only player you have mentioned who I'd currently take over Wilshire, but that'll probably change in the next few years.

In saying that I agree that they play different positions.

Yeah, Goetze is way better than Wilshere. A discussion for another day methinks, one where Wilshere hasn't only played a few weeks of football in the last 18months. Regardless of that, as Jim says different position. I'm talking about long term solutions for a proper central midfielder.

Yeah, Goetze is way better than Wilshere. Just seen this. He isn't. Wilshere's superior.

Just seen this. He isn't. Wilshere's superior. Better? He certainly isn't way better that's for sure, would say a similar sort of level at the moment but either way both will end up being world class.
