HA!
I remember thinking Reo-Coker was the answer in midfield.

We've all wanted stupid transfers though. I thought Milner would have been great for us.... I thought Nasri would win Arsenal a title and was gutted we didn't go in for him. Was also convinced Shevchenko would tear up the PL. I remember a 'things you got wrong' thread from last year, might go re-read that - always funny seeing what people were dead wrong about. Edit: I was also a big fan of Tiote at the time. Like you, I forgot he died the other week - awful.

I also remember saying we could do worse than Sissoko more than once. Blinded by our need for a ball carrier!

I put forward the notion of Junior Hoilett as an option for the wing.
He was a lot younger then but you know, still.

I was annoyed when we didn't get him (the greedy prick)

Also- the barren midfield years under Fergie made pretty much all of us lose our minds over potential CM targets. So we all get free passes!

Anyway, on Matic- here's a decent vid of him last season. Usual YouTube provisos and he was complete gash in the FA Cup Final but still, some impressive stuff here:

Think I must resume my Lazarus duties on this board and resurrect that thread.

He's a better footballer than he's given credit for. Not a total donkey/water carrier by any means.

Without wanting to pour more gasoline on this fire, I'm caught in two minds about our summer signings. First off, the fees are irrelevant bc everybody is going for stupid money this summer. If we'd have signed Lukaku and Matic 3 years ago, we'd have been ecstatic. If you'd have told us in April/May, we'd have been rather underwhelmed, as these aren't the world class names we were all lusting over.
However, upon reflection, as mentioned above, we've all been guilty of burning candles for plenty of flavours of plenty of months that haven't exactly turned out. Ozil, Otamendi, Mangala, Tiote et al all spring to mind. I'm loathed to play the trust the manager card bc I didn't give Fergie that luxury, and he was the best there ever was, but there is a level of trust that Jose has earned that didn't exist under Moyes or LvG. I can understand the need to free up Pogba and Herrera so they can drive the play forward, and Jose clearly trusts Matic to reprise that role he played in his title winning sides. Fair enough.
At the end of the day, Matic and Lukaku aren't going to win us the title. Mata, Martial, Rashford, Mkhitaryan and Pogba need to perform at a much higher level than they did last season if we are to challenge for the title. If Matic provides the shielding necessary to allow those players to flourish then he's the right signing at the right time.
Conversely, the thought occurred to me that if Jose is serious about building a legacy and remaining long term, he knows he must build through youth. Perhaps some of the older players are stop gaps until they are ready to step in full time.
I'm going to hold my fire on this summer until I see the results on the pitch. It could go either way imho.
