Xavi another midfielder great, was barely rated till his mid twenties. Gerrard i cannot precisely remember but wasnt he injury plagued till 20? xavi barely rated by who? i bet no-one around the barca camp had any doubt. barely rated and injury plagued isn't really the point, it's about when they were deemed ready for the first team and broke through

Anyway it doesn't really matter, each player is an individual. Age we shouldn't worry about to much, Xavi is a prime example, he didnt get much of a look in till he was past 24, i think they even considered selling him at some point. then he went on to be the best midfielder in the world for 3 or 4 years and counting. Sure maybe they did rate him, a'la some of us and Clevers. As you say though its about when they are deemed ready. You were the one who pointed out age, not me

As he aged they built a team around him and his talents shone.

My last word on Cleverley, actually comes from Sir Alex and Sky Sports 1 who quoted it in another thread:
Sir Alex Ferguson about Tom Cleverley: "Cleverley's a massive loss," he said. "He, to my mind, is probably the best midfield player in Britain, potentially. He has fantastic promise, so it's a loss to us."
Now, when is Powell getting his photie took with Gill and a nice pjama outfit? Let's get this one sussed already!

Why does Powell look so sad holding on to those pajama's.
Or is it him dosing off...

Xavi was rated very highly, he just wasn't on everybody's lips because of Ronaldinho and Deco. They were the main men that time. Along with Eto'o.

And Guadiola was still playing for them and Xavi's position was/is exactly the same.
Shame, United enquired about him at the time, and he thought about coming here but then he decided to stay and fight for his place.

Sparing myself from reading through the previous 20 odd pages....
Has anybody actually seen Powell play a full match for Crewe? Are we looking at a centre mid who tracks back or second striker or possible winger?

Basing purely on this video I kind of see why Fergie used the Ronaldo comparison about him. Seems to be a very straightforward player, looks for the goal as soon as he gets the ball.
