always wanted to learn to play the guitar. Its the perfect party instrument. I've been drumming for well over 12 years now but, have only ever fluttered with the idea of learning.

I've told my missus to get us a strat for my birthday. Something I've always wanted. How's everyone doing with their music? Still strumming bestie?!! I've been looking at a vox ac30 for the amp but there a touch out of my league!

Completely forgot to post in here over the weekend! To answer your question, yes I certainly am strumming away mate. Loving every minute of it. No matter how shit I feel going into a guitar session I always, genuinely mean always, come out of it on a high. Don't even care that I've learned so much and yet still nowhere, which is a pretty massive thing for me.

Would you recommend lessons then? I've always been a bit shy about playing in front of others. Good rockstar material eh!!

I like having a guy there to ask questions of and get specific help with the odd thing beyond the basic guitar-learning. It's also really useful for me to have an hour set aside where I cannot get away without practicing. Means I practice more outside lessons as well, otherwise I simply wouldn't have time. If you understand what I mean, I can justify not doing other things I technically should be doing (staying late in the office for example) because I have guitar lessons instead.

I think the big difference between now and when I last played regularly is YouTube. In my late teens, early twenties I played every day. I just don't seem to have the time now. However if I get that strat I'll bloody make time!! For me I used to really buzz when I found a new riff. I remember one day my mam came in the bedroom and told me I was playing paint it black,I was oblivious to it! Just in the groove.

I think the great thing about playing guitar is that you can live the dream even if you are self taught. Particularly in the 90's this was something everyone believed they could do. Having said all that, I'd advocate lessons personally. There's things that you'll just never know without someone telling you. It improves your understanding of music in it's written form which would be tough to teach yourself and makes you probably more technically proficient. Plus, it's good to have someone to bounce ideas off and if you're lacking in a bit of confidence, it never hurts to have a quality guitarist telling you that you're doing well. It's horses for courses I suppose. Not every teacher is the right teacher for you. My first wasn't great, my second was fantastic, my third was a wanker etc.

Nothing wrong with his signing voice. His speaking voice however...

Jimi was fantastic for sure but let's not forget Jimmy Page and Tony Iommi from Zepplin and Black Sabbath, two other monsters at their trade...
