26/02/2016 12:21, Report by Mark Froggatt UNITED TO FACE LIVERPOOL IN EUROPA LEAGUE Manchester United have been drawn against historic rivals Liverpool in the Europa League Round of 16, after progressing in the competition with a 6-3 aggregate win over FC Midtjylland.
Friday afternoon’s much-anticipated draw was open with no seeding or country restrictions, which led to the two most successful clubs in English football being paired together in a European competition for the first time. The first leg will be played at Anfield on Thursday 10 March with the return fixture at Old Trafford on Thursday 17 March. If Louis van Gaal's men can win the Europa League this season, it would secure a place in the Champions League and add United’s name to the list of clubs to have won all three of UEFA’s major competitions, alongside Chelsea, Ajax, Bayern Munich and Juventus. The Reds have already lifted three European Cups (1968, 1999 and 2008) and the European Cup Winners’ Cup (1991). EUROPA LEAGUE ROUND OF 16 FC Shakhtar Donetsk v RSC Anderlecht FC Basel 1893 v Sevilla FC Villarreal CF v Bayer 04 Leverkusen Athletic Club v Valencia CF Liverpool v Manchester United Sparta Prague v Lazio Borussia Dortmund v Tottenham Hotspur Fenerbahce v SC Braga www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Football-News/2016/Feb/Manchester-United-drawn-against-Liverpool-in-Europa-League-Round-of-16.aspx

If ever there was a game I wanted to win this season, its this one. Knocking them out of Europe would be the sweetest of victories.
Can't fucking wait. Gonna be a few Friday hangovers now.

It's a good draw for us because we're away for the first leg and they'll be wary of us scoring away goals.
We usually do them at home.

This was the draw I wanted. Over the last few years it's felt like we've not really had many big games because we've not really been competing for anything. Obviously us vs them is a big game in any competition, but especially in Europe and especially with this being the only avenue for both sides to qualify for the Champions League. I've no doubt there'll be twists and turns over the two legs, but playing away in the first match is a huge advantage. It's important to play that second game, knowing what you need to do, at home. I reckon we'll do them, but there's always a chance the confidence will be ripped away from me before then.

Damn! this means we have an incentive to stay in it now. Aye, because there were no incentives like winning a trophy, playing the youth, or qualifying for the European Cup before this draw ...

Bit strange seeing the two biggest, most historic clubs in England face each other in the "iconic tie" of the draw, in the round of 16 of the Europa League.
