www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23967515Manchester United need someone to help them in the transfer market, according to former Tottenham and Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli. United manager David Moyes and chief executive Ed Woodward are new to their roles at the club and had a difficult summer in the transfer market. The club missed out on numerous targets before signing Everton's Marouane Fellaini for £27.5m on deadline day. "If there's a club who needs a director of football it's United," said Comolli. "It would ease the process for both individuals." United signed Fellaini on transfer deadline day, but failed with late moves for Everton defender Leighton Baines, Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera and Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao. Moyes was also unsuccessful earlier in the summer when Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas stayed at the Nou Camp and midfielder Thiago Alacantara opted to join German side Bayern Munich when he left the Spanish champions. United's former manager Sir Alex Ferguson left the club at the end of last season, while chief executive David Gill also moved on from Old Trafford in June. However, Comolli, who was in charge of transfer affairs at Tottenham from 2005 to 2008 and at Liverpool from 2010 to 2012, said a director of football would have eased the pressure on Moyes and Woodward. "David only joined on 1 July which was quite late," added Comolli on BBC Radio 5 live. "The issue for Manchester United is that the two most important people at the club in Sir Alex and David Gill left their positions and new people came in for their first transfer window. "For some reason the club weren't prepared or they didn't think it would be that difficult and they ended up in a difficult situation." Anyone agree? If I remember correctly comoli was an utter disaster for both clubs.... This the man who helped sign Henderson, Carroll and downing for a combined total of 80 million, so he is probably the worse person to call for a DOF

Swell job he did with Liverpoop eh? Stay away from us please, and keep your advice thank you very much. lol, so much dross from the media. Everyone now thinks United are in dire, collapsing straits and almost every pundit, media or junkie thinks they're entitled to tell United - who is arguably the World's most successful football club - what they should do. lol.

Looks like the briefings have begin and the clubs favoured journalists (daniel taylor, henry winter) have written very explanatory articles which attempt to make manchester united look very considered and professional about the whole thing, the PR department are working hard on this one. Its quite interesting to read the pro united articles, they quite easily paint the whole thing as a deliberate strategy....however I am not buying it verbatim, I think one of the big points to come out which I do agree with is that we have all ignored to a certain extent the amount of effort it took to stop Rooney taking a train to London. The united info seems to suggest that Moyes chose to end pursuit of Thiago because he ''didnt want to take someones word for it'' (in other words, he did not trust the scouting of the previous 3 years) - which to me sounds ignorant. Bang on. Our spin doctors are working overtime revising the history of this summers debacle. Next time we look, Sept 2 will be declared a national holiday celebrating the great triumph of our fearless comrade leader.

According to today's BBC Sport gossip column, the Mirror is reporting this; "Manchester United's owners, the Glazer family, want an explanation from executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward about what went wrong in the summer transfer market, despite signing 25-year-old midfielder Marouane Fellaini from Everton for £27.5m." www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/manchester-united-owners-want-answers-2258839No quote, sources or substance, so your usual Mirror article. Still, thought I would share.

@andymitten: Finished interview with Ed Woodward. A big one. Nothing off limits. It's in UWS mag out in a month, not new one out on Sat.
Worth buying for those that don't already.

Can't wait to read the interview, going to be very interested to see what he has to say about a summer filled with embarrassment for Manchester United.
I know its hypothetical bullshit but I keep saying how great it would have been if David Gill hung on for one more year, losing him at the same time as losing Alex was a huge blow.

Do you think Mr. Woodward will say anything more than the guff sent round to fans about their 'two priorities'?

here it is, this is what is has come to.
so frustrated am i with this guy's inability to close a deal, that i have decided to resurrect this thread. A thread directed and dedicated solely to YOU ED!
so here it is lads, a place to vent and express your feeling about ED, or to come to his defense, should you so choose.
I'll say it here, right now that i think this guy is a poser, and i will stick to that assessment until he proves me otherwise. Herrera & Shaw you say? i say he had 1 year to 6 months to do these deals, as they were identified before or during the last season, and in one case it was his second attempt at a non-moving target (Herrea's buy-out clause hadn't changed from last summer)
so where does this leave us? in practically the same place we were last season, only this time we dont have the distraction of an unsure, ill-equipped, dithering manager at the helm to provide cover for Ed's inabilities.
It should never have come to this imho. i refuse to believe that LVG hasn't provided a shortlist of players he wants, and i refuse to believe that list was provided only when he came back from the tour. we live in 2014, where cell phones, tablets, laptops are extensions of the modern day executive. how is it then that he only knew LVG interests when they were back in Manchester? this couldn't have been handled through a phone call? leaving us in the position where we are starting the season, again, with major gaps in the squad, and no confidence that they will be addressed before the window shuts.
Edward, you have been found wanting twice in the two years that you have been in-charge of player recruitment. Personally, if i were you i'd ask for my old job back, but i dont suspect your that kind of guy. i figure your the kind of guy that sticks to doing a piss poor job, and tries to weather the storm that ensues.
I hope i'm wrong about you Edward (and im addressing you directly as i figure ether you or one of your cronies scours the web for you name daily, and thus will stumble upon this at some point) but i suspect, as with Dithering Dave i will be proven correct, and we will have another agonizing wait to see how long it is before the owners figure out it's time to pull out the old metaphorical shot gun, and take the lame horse out back to do the business.

I find it really hard to disagree. Like you, I hope to be proved wrong but I'm not holding out much hope...it is either that Ed is an idiot who cannot do a deal where it means us buying someone or LvG is stupid and doesn't see what the squad needs...there may be other explanations but I can't be arsed to think of them any more...I'm tired of it all...

Oh, and one last thing Edward. as a big executive type, with a strong marketing background i'd figure you's already know this but, in business, its best when you dampen expectations and over deliver, rather than increasing expectations and under-delivering.
i sincerely hope you DON'T get the chance to prove this theory right (see last paragraph of my previous post), but should you somehow manage to slither through your second major transfer window failure, it's best you don't give major interviews to mainstream media (and video interviews at that) saying we are awash with cash and can buy any player we want. Your actions over this and previous windows have shown how ridiculous that is. no need to further that myth.

Ed, oh Ed...... did you watch that Ed? Was you even in the stadium Ed? Do you even care Ed? Meh..... I hope you are enjoying the free sandwiches at all of those 'transfer summits', it seems to be the only thing you get from those meetings.
