Cause of the longevity sure, but one of the greatest misconceptions in football is that Rooney was better when he was young. He was heaps better. People are saying he was really good yesterday but he's not able pull things out of nowhere anymore in open play. I can remember when he used to go on long streaks without scoring and he was still excellent. He was nowhere near as effective as a teenager as he has been in recent years. Didn't score nearly as many goals, didn't get nearly as many assists. People got all excited seeing him making powerful runs from deep and hitting shots from 30 yards, but he wasn't anywhere near as good a player. He has become so much more complete.

He looked a bit better this year but at the end of last year I would have driven Rooney out myself. He'd declined massively.

Last year wasn't his best season but even last year he had the 2nd highest assists total in the league. People just don't notice a lot of the good things he does.
The previous season was his best year for goals.

I dont think any one can question what he does for us, yes last season towards the end I thought he was lazy and complacent by his standards, what I question is his heart and mind! and that very much appears to be not UNITED!

My final thought on Rooney, if he goes then I dont give a shit, we simply move on as we have always done.... We will know soon enough as we have to offer him a new contract and if that is not forth coming then its a good bye and we will see him playing less games as we try to adapt the team without him IMO

Rooney was at his peak around 2010-2013. In 2010 he was superb, his injury cost us the league and a champions league final appearance. In those seasons he was miles ahead technically to what he was as a youngster. His game intelligence for a start. He doesn't hit the wonder goals but there is no comparison for me, I'm with Tommy.

it's a trade-off you can argue either way for. he's definitely a more complete player now but he's lost a bit of the urgency and freedom that made him so explosive as a kid. he doesn't have the skill to pull off the flicks and un-necessary stuff he attempts, and he definitely shouldn't be strutting around the midfield like scholes.

Sorry, Meant 2011, when he was instrumental in winning us the league and getting to the Champions Lge final.

It seems there should be a new thread on Young Wayne vs Old Rooney I would like to put it in one sentence: The number of goals he has scored has declined to some extent, but his overall contribution to the team has definitely increased. IMHO, he would have double / triple the number of fans he already has, if he would have made us feel that he is an Out-n-Out united player.

Isn't he basically like Rooney though? Watching the Chelsea game he reminded me so much of Rooney when he first broke through. The power and the runs from deep. I'd love us to go in for him though. He's going to end up at one of the top clubs in England so we have to make sure it's us. Surely with Moyes we have an advantage there. I have my doubts here , sure we should go for him , actually thought that out of the two players we were after one of them was Barkley , bu that said after the way they have gone about with Fellaini and Baines Bid i'd be very much surprised if we had this easy. WIth "Big Man" Martinez there and Ed with us we'd prob go in with 12M and few Chicken Burritos when they'd be asking for 30M (Min). we weren't reasy to pay the release clause for Herrera , doubt if we'd pay high for Barkley

Young Rooney or Old, Moyes doesn't care. He has set a 30 goal target for this season. Wants to play Rooney as a striker and not in midfield. Guess the only way Kagawa can now get in the team is at the expense of Wellbz or any of the wingers
