Juan Mata is expected to seal his move from Chelsea to Manchester United on Thursday.
The Spain international did not train with Chelsea on Wednesday but is understood to have told team-mates that his departure from the club was imminent.
A £40m offer for Mata is thought to have been made through a third party on Wednesday, although it is understood Chelsea have yet to formally accept a bid from United.
But a deal between the two clubs is expected to be agreed later on Thursday with Mata set to become the Premier League champions' record signing.
All parties are keen for the transfer to go through, according to Sky Sports' Spanish football expert Guilleme Balague, and there has been speculation that a medical will take place before the weekend.
Chelsea are understood to be happy to sell as manager Jose Mourinho has a wealth of attacking options in his squad and currently prefers other players to the Spaniard.
The Blues would also make a significant profit on the man they signed for £23.5m from Valencia in 2011.
For Mata, the transfer would give him an opportunity for much more playing time with the World Cup in Brazil looming this summer.
Balague says all parties want the transfer to go ahead.
Balague revealed on Revista de La Liga: "The idea is that Mata, who Chelsea are happy to let go, goes to Old Trafford in this transfer window.
"I am under the impression that a deal will be reached because it benefits everybody.
"United need quality, Mata needs to get out of the situation he is in and it would reinforce United for their meetings with (Chelsea's title rivals) Manchester City and Arsenal, which is clever from Jose Mourinho."

He goes, Kags gets his number 10 spot and we go for someone for the centre mid spot without selling (except Rooney).

Agreed, but i just don't see Dm wanting to let go of Rooney, was even suggesting with @bestie that he was maybe bigging up Roo for the eventual sale and hopefuly that's what all the arse-licking was but its still very nervy for me. Roo being the reason we are were we are in the table and we could be worse of without him - may be a sound argument but the club's never about a player, less about a cunt. It'd be great if we could sell him off, maybe get Cavani ( not really interested) - i'd rather Falcao or Shawaary and build the triad behind RvP is what i want buy you can bet that DM would have Mata on the left and Januzaj on the right and Roo behind the striker and move out Kags. Having got a Spanish , hope we get a good German Mid as well and a certain LB. quite the talk that we aren't done ye in Jan itself and that its part of a bigger Summer window.

Plus swaps deals almost never happen. Plus we wont need a make-weight to get Gundogen, allegedly has a release clause, but even if not hes contract running down so he shouldnt cost much over £20mill in summer anyway.

ESPN were pretty much in agreement that we are desperate and over paying for a big club reject. Couldn't believe it. Van Persie was 'a desperation buy' as well. Also, I'm not entirely convinced we're actually getting Mata yet either. I just cannot seem to fathom it.

Pics or it isn't happening. Speaking of happening, Carbs? Is there an extra special .gif saved for such an occasion? And everyone say goodbye to Chill Phil if pictures are released of Mata with our shirt. Also I might reward the Glazers by purchasing a shirt and getting Mata on the back. I'll get it in the Megastore and give them the feedback that I am only buying one because of the signing. Call it positive reinforcement.

Obviously won't count my chickens, but I'm bubbling this morning (all the more surprising after the loss last night). We seem to have pulled it off. This deal will mean more to us than just getting the world class player that Mata is, it shows our ambition, our financial power and that we can still attract big players. It should make our summer pursuits a little easier, too. Before all the "spotted at Bridgewater for his medical" shit starts, does anyone know if the Carrington facility is up to scratch yet and whether the medicals are done in full there yet? So excited to see the interlinking between Januzaj, Kagawa, Mata & RVP, this signing gives us real depth and, thankfully, will alleviate a bit of our over-reliance on the 18 year old. He'll learn so much from Mata too, I think, in terms of positioning and vision etc. Also, what happened to the Coentrao loan? I think those facilities are in place, Fergie seemed to suggest they were in his book anyway. Ye i agree that we may not be done yet in this window, lots of clubs will look at this and realise that we aren't afraid to spend a lot of money and they might loosen the shackles on some of their priced assets. Also, if this those get done today, its nice to have another week to plough on in the window, knowing we already have secured a world class player.

Funny that, Mata arriving in a chopper and all.
Would it be far-fetched to imagine him fully suited up with specs and a 9mm tucked into his jacket?
I think I'm coming to terms with the fact that, ultimately, we need two more midfielders - our base of two needs to be replaced over the next 2 years , Carrick and Fletcher are not a European Cup winning combination and even with just one of them in there, we'll eventually need to replace the other.

Yup after mata a midfield destroyer is needed. Reality is with mata, adnan and Rooney behind rvp there is creativity we need a destroyer that can pass, sits deep but is mobile and to be fair I fully believe fletcher and fellaini can rotate playing the role of box to box

Reading more into the Chelsea situation, they are a joke. Premier league clubs are only allowed 17 foreign players over the age of 21 in their squads. Chelsea are on 17. If they sell Mata, they will more than likely buy a foreign player before the end of the window, therefore, on the edge again. No surprise really that they have so many on loan, including Courtois and Marin, www.chelseafc.com/on-loan-playersWe may not spend as much as them, but there definitely is a sense of pride when comparing the amount of home grown players in our squad and theirs, and then looking at what we have won in the last 7 years!

ESPN were pretty much in agreement that we are desperate and over paying for a big club reject. Couldn't believe it. ESPN are pretty much a band of players and pundits who have no connection with United whatsoever, effectively ABU's . They know Mata is a class act but will never admit it. Par for the course.
