When this rumour first started 'smoking' I dismissed it. No way I'd thought Chelsea would be reasonable about it. It surprised me how it turned out. I think we've made a very smart move, a top quality proven player who we couldn't be absolutely fleeced for. I'd hoped we'd get some business done now to ease off a potentially very busy summer and we have done, a big deal out the way. Hopefully it gives us a boost and if he can give us the platform to get the strikers going, then we can build momentum. Mata does seem like a nice guy too, a very exciting buy.

Looking at the video I can draw a few conclusions about how Mata would be most effective for us. He needs a solid central midfielder behind him to shore things up. Mata was dropping very deep yesterday at times. Which he shouldn't be doing but had to because he had 2 players who aren't CMs in the CM slot. Even Cleverley rather than Giggs and he would play with more of an attacking intent. But he needs a Gundogan/Vidal/Kroos type solid midfielder behind him so he can focus on attack. He needs a Kagawa playing by his side. Ashley Young just does not have the tactical nous or acumen or technical ability to effectively play alongside Mata. Just no. With a Kagawa and Januzaj next to him the build up play would be gorgeous. Which brings me up to my next point. We have to ditch this archaic 4-4-2 nonsense. A 4-2-3-1 is best suited to use all our attacking talents . RVP
Kagawa----Mata----Januzaj With the 3 swapping and interchanging fluidly it would be great to watch. Oh and sell Rooney. Like immediately. And use that money to put 50 million for Vidal or 40 for Gundogan.

He was dropping far too deep last night, but he knew from the off that with Giggs and Jones starting together, he would have too. Say's a lot that he's been officially with us for a few days and he already knew the graft he would have to put in from the off. And Mourinho thought this guy didn't put in the work he wanted too. Terrible idea to start Giggs, like it always is, and it meant Mata wasn't as effective as he should have been. If Moyes keeps recognising that we still aren't playing well, he has to realise that it comes from his midfield pairings. It's blaringly obvious. The front 4 leaves us great options, but the rest needs so much work. Sort it Dave, quickly. Mata's signing is a stop gap for how we really are. At least he does see it.

How is it that we fans (who are not qualified or have experience) can see this and DD doesn't...it really isn't that clever is it? I die inside a little sometimes when I see our starting line ups....

He passes it from the edge of the left side of the eighteen yard box, and then as the move levels off, he's picking the pass up on the right hand side of the box a few moment later. We absolutely must get quality in around him to make the most of how good he is. Build the team around him if you have to, just do everything to ensure we get the best from him.

What stands out ,for me, is that he not only has control of the ball even under pressure but always has his head up looking for the forward pass rather than the safe way out or lose possession. + His crosses to the box will always trouble defense if we get to have enough bodies in there. I actually was lil disappointed that RvP wasn't in the box when Mata was taking the FK.
He does the quick pass and turn and moves forward , him with Ladnan and Kags would mean that the opposition defense would be stretched and tired by half time as all can switch and move around quick. Add an intelligent striker to that or a poacher and your attack is set for free flowing football with lots of goals.
Problem is that we will have Fella or Giggs behind them which will negate everything. DM is getting more assertive in his post match interviews and said that he was disappointed with the way we played and is far from what we should be but he needs to start by blaming himself for putting in Giggs there to start with. He is not a CM.

How Mata played yesterday reminds me of how Januzaj plays at Moyes' definition of an AM. In fact, it's safe to say that Moyes has played Fellaini, Rooney, Kagawa, Januzaj and Mata at the AM positions with the same instructions. He likes to ask them to come deep, and pass the ball long. With the exception of Fellaini and Kagawa who don't do it quite as often - otherwise, Mata, Rooney and Januzaj have done it several times - some paying dividends, but others not. Mata and Rooney have the skill sets to do this, but it isn't the most effective type of football AMs should be playing.
Moyes IMO, might continue to use his AMs in this manner, and it will be a waste. Like many of ourselves have mentioned, a Januzaj - Kagawa - Mata in whichever order playing behind the striker, short - medium range passes, in a narrower width without wingers but with wingbacks, might be the key answer.
As it is, we are already playing without wingers - with the exception of Januzaj on the left or right, Young and Valencia hardly puts in a cross and you see them more frequently in the middle or playing short passes, flicks and shots (only Ronaldo-esque wingers should be doing this - which none of them are). It seems that Moyes is confused with the definition of an AM and Wingers at times. And you see that Rafael / Smalling and Evra / Buttner helping out with crosses.
If that's the case, I really don't know why Moyes is being a tactical idiot. He has tried combinations after combinations but have failed to play the combination that has come to most of us naturally.
This isn't a question of the players' ability - this is solely the question of the tactical nous that we have put out week in, week out. Other areas of the field perhaps you can question the integrity of players (defense), but not at the AM spot. It's currently ineffective.
Mata - Oscar - Hazard - has it not tinkle any bells in Moyes' head?
[PS. I am a Moyes supporter]

Atleast he has got RVP for company. Sign a world class No 10 and play a rigid 4-4-2 with out of from wingers

Mata slotted in naturally, like he was here for years. That exposes MF who has looked out of place in every game. Long term I think MF will go down as a failure. Mata looked especially sharp with Tony and Rafa around him. Like the fact that he doesn't moan when kicked but just gets up. Also was spreading the ball, we have missed that since Scholes departure. Finally something to be pleased about this season.

Was forced to drop deep a lot but thats more the failings of our CM's not winning the ball and feeding him.

How does he always have the perfect amount of facial hair?

How does he always have the perfect amount of facial hair? It's almost infuriating for me; I'm 29 this year and my best facial hair growth resembles a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

When I was at the bar watching us play Stoke the Barcelona game was on the next TV. Several attractive young women were watching the Barcelona game. There was a collective swoon when they looked over and saw Mata on the screen. Can't blame them.
