No place to fit Rooney in? Under serious pressure? Should do but not going to happen IMO. Not debating what people are saying but LVG handing him armband tells you what the gaffer thinks in his opinion. Rooney's probably a shoe in for either playing in the no.10 position behind RVP and Falcao, van Gaal could also withdraw him back into the midfield area in most games. If LVG persists with Rooney which seems likely there's bugger all, me you or anyone else can do about it fellas. If rooneys performances don't improve LVG will have no choice but to bench him especially if mata picks up a bit of form. Rooney is making a lot of money a week but that doesn't make him immune from the bench. HE WILL HAVE TO FIGHT FOR HIS PLACE.

It's been said that despite a lack of form, LVG really likes Mata so that number 10 role should be his. As much as he gets on with RVP, I think he will be the man to be left out. Should be Rooney, we all know that, but he's made him captain and he will almost always play. Proof of this theory is that RVP wasn't made captain when we all thought it was a cert. plus RVP is the oldest. Might play a part in his decision.

Can't see Fletcher getting as much game time now with Blind there so although UE would have made a good choice it would have been pointless. Personally there isn't anybody in the squad that deserves it. If I was going to choose someone it would be Jones or De Gea. 2 players that have put the effort in, 2 players that are willing to fight for the cause. The only 2 players so far anything positive can be said about. Still think Evans is a shout. I know some are scathing about him and he's had a dreadful first couple of competitive games, but if he can get used to the system or we go back to 4- then he'll still be on of our best CBs. Academy graduate, genuinely adores the club, and a really nice lad to boot. Plus he talk to the defence around him, which I like in a captain. Good on the ball too (usually!) which you'd imagine van Gaal would like.

I'd say Jones, if he can stay fit.

United apparently in talks to renew Jones and De Gea's contracts, per James Ducker.
Good, 10 year contracts.
Done.

I do sumpathise with him a little as he basically been destroyed by people. Yet when you look at the likes of Rooney who IMO has been equally as shit and not had half the abuse Evans has is quite poor on the supporters part.

Anyone think Van Gaal was talking about Wayne when discussing 'commercial commitments'?

Anyone think Van Gaal was talking about Wayne when discussing 'commercial commitments'? Yep, and I also think that perhaps there is some ulterior motive in this as well. With the focus on the armband, if Rooney doesn't step up and show he should be wearing it, much easier to bench him, or even transfer him. Maybe we can trade him to Dortmund for Hummels and Rooney can play back up to Kags

The armband would only add to his uneasiness. De Gea should have the Captaincy. Not sure he is vocal enough for it.

LVG gave Fletcher and Cleverley the captain's armband on the pre-season tour too. And both will perhaps not find a place in the Starting XI (bar injuries). Same fate for Rooney then? LVG should never have given the armband to Rooney for the simple reason that someone leading the line needs to be worrying about himself, and needs to be selfish in front of goal, and ruthless. Giving Rooney the armband means Rooney will be looking around "to lead" by shouting at people instead of just putting the ball in the net. Getting a striker to think too much about the process of scoring instead of just getting them to play by instinct is the death of a striker like Rooney. The armband should go to someone whose job is to boss the others around. To me it should be more about on-field effectiveness and not a walk down hallowed halls. When Blind gets match-ready, it should be Blind.
