Hummels should be possible. Heard ManU have inquired about Varane's availability. Else Vlaar over Vermaelen. ManU...

Varane would be my ideal signing but I highly doubt he would be available. I'm pretty sure Real know they have a defender who is among the best aged only 21 and will continue to get better and better, why would they let him leave? Yeah they've spent shit loads of money again but it's not like they're a club which has to sell to finance these deals. This transfer rumour is an absolute non-starter I reckon.
Hummels is fantastic but again, I can't see it happening.
Vermaelen or Vlaar would be good, not the best in the world but definitely solid and Vlaar in particular was excellent at the World Cup. Both in their late 20's also so they wouldn't get in the way of United's youth prospects for too long, hopefully enabling players like Keane and Thorpe to get a shot eventually and to continue the development of Jones and Smalling (if they can go a season without being constantly injured).
Despite the midfield still desperately needing a signing, I do think that the defence is equally important now that we've lost Ferdinand, Vidic and Evra. Evra has been replaced but currently in the centre there's only Evans, Jones and Smalling with Keane as the youth prospect. Given the injury record of Jones and Smalling, it's a little concerning.

Hummels or no one. Blackett changed everything last night. 110 thousand, Real Madrid, Bale and then Ronaldo and he looked like he was playing the game in slippers reading a good book. And he's fast and a physical beast.
Play him.

Hummels/Benatia or trust Keane and Tyler to step up when needed. TV can stay at the Arse treatment table
The thickness and naivety is being slowly coached out of Jones. We are now seeing the lad who at the time of signing looked to have all the tools to become a WC CB..

Keane got taught a bit of a footballing lesson last night. Thought he struggled at times with Bale. Agree Blackett looked really solid!

Evans saying "so long as we got results, everything was fine" is very telling. Confirms what many saw as technical and tactical regression of the post CQ era. Remarkable improvement in many aspects already.

I'm not saying he's shit, he's a young lad and it would have been a cracking experience for him. This is an exaggeration... Cleverley is better than 2 x Christiano Ronaldo's!!

Well, if he got better support from the wing back. Oh wait, it was Tony V, wasn't it? And I saw he played much better after that error and especially after Tony V was subbed by Lingard, and Lingard is not even a wing back. Buy another CB? I would rather give chance to Keane and Blackett. They are good cover, much better solution than throwing the money away and stall their development. Why are people obsessed with buying when you already have a good cover for that CB spot? This year is a good year for Keane and Blackett, as we do not involve with CL. They will have their chances with League cup and friendly matches mid season.

Another CB is still 100% necessary.
As for Keane, yes he struggled vs Bale, but Bale's one of the World's best players. There's not many defenders who'll nt struggle, and felt, bar the penalty, Keane dealt with him pretty well.

Even Hummels would have struggled one on one against Bale.
Think it's quite telling that LvG kept Keane on and took Valencia off. And that Bale had fewer opportunities in the second half.
