The midfield is literally an obsession on here. It's all consuming & keeping people up at night. But deep down in all your little muppet hearts you all know we need a central defender more. Let's hear it, who do we go for?

In a dream world it has to be Hummels. At this stage I would settle for Vermaelen.

Any, just as long as we can go back to sorting midfield again quickly.... Oh go on then, Hummels.

If he could stay fit I think there is scope for Vermaelen to be very good for us.

Howedes, from Schalke. Can play right and left back, step out of defence, and is a very solid CB. Gettable too.
But defence is not a priority, uh, somewhere else on the pitch is ...

What kind of CB is Thorpe? A Vida or Rio type or a hybrid? After LVG's comments, am all giddy about our reserve prospects. M Keane looks comfy on the ball and I would play him ahead of Jones whose problem is awareness and discipline.

Not seen him. How much would he cost? Not sure how much Schalke would be willing to let him go for. He's their captain and has been there through all the youth ranks. On the other hand, it's Schalke - they don't have the staying power of Bayern or Dortmund. £ 20 million would almost certainly get the job done. Probably a bit less even, or with add-ons. Thorpe is the type of guy who can get sent flying over advertising boards and get right back up afterwards:

I refuse to believe that was real. His reactions is like "what the fuck is all the fuss about. Just get on with it". Even better if he can send opposition players flying.

Aymeric Laporte is the one for me. Dogs bollocks and was stand out player in all the big games last season. I would most definitely trigger his 30m clause.
Varane, Laporte, Zouma and Mangala. France should have the best CB pairing in a few years.

Jagielka, apparently he's better than Rio...
