This one blames Mainoo for the goal AND Rice’s performance. This is why you don’t want United players playing for England. Jesus wept. ‘Lacks physicality’ Does this clown think it’s 1987? It’s an early reality check for him about what international football or more precisely playing for England is like.

Not sure who was at fault for the following ten years.

Steinberg is the moron who had the "ten Hag definitely sacked" exclusive a while ago, isn't he?
The Guardian should stick to stories about social workers and teachers.

Pretty sure had he lost the cup final, he'd have been sacked. I think the cup saved him plus the options out there right now are suspect.

He’s actually a strong lad, seen him hold off plenty that have tried to outmuscle him, the pundits even did a highlight reel before the game showing this and waistcoat said during his pressers how strong he is and he’d shown it in training yet these goons say he lacks physicality, utter nonsense, plus he’s only 19 and will only get stronger

Rice was nowhere to be seen when that counter happened, mainoo perhaps could have spotted the danger a little sooner and got across but its harsh to put blame solely on him, it was a collection of shit from several players, the lad who scored cut inside stones like he wasn’t there and got his shot away far too easily, shite defending

It’s like a narrative is created out of nothing and people stick to it despite all evidence to the contrary.

Counter attacks happen in games. That was Iceland’s game plan, obviously. Good teams can be susceptible to them. But that’s barely even a chance with a decent keeper in goal. Bizarre decision from Southgate to play his first choice keeper in the other friendly with a load of players he has no intention of fielding in the tournament and then playing the reserve keeper in a game where you need to bed in a completely new starting back four. Surely would’ve been beneficial for that new back four to have Pickford behind them.

United players are always first in the firing line. Nothing changes.

Wasn’t even a proper chance that free kick. From what I recall, it was a decent effort he had at it as well. Think he got 5mins against France and did really well. Ridiculous though to give him a daft 5mins considering his form in the tournament. I think it was a mistake not taking Rashford this time. England’s left hand side is poor. No left back and the only left sided player with pace is Gordon who is completely untested. One thing Rashford has is pace and that’s massive at international level. Good relationship with Kane, who plays best with someone making runs in behind (see Son). He scored a goal earlier this season for England (I think against Italy) that nobody else in this squad could have scored. I know people here are saying it’s good because Marcus can focus on having a quiet summer and getting his head right. And that may be a good thing. It’s certainly not bad. However, he went into that last World Cup on poor form. It was a surprise he was picked for that tournament. But he found form there and then never stopped when he came back for United. It was massively beneficial for us. He wouldn’t have hit that form if he hadn’t gone away with England. So selfishly, from a United point of view, I would’ve liked to have seen him go.

Jacob Steinberg, the knob that wrote the Mainoo hit piece, has an interesting history, so to speak.

Sun football had Mainoo down as one of the few positives of the game praising his composure and positioning and saying he looking anything but an inexperienced teenager.
Anyway we all know the problem with England. They've become completely reliant on Bellingham and this time round they have far too many new faces who've not played much together and their manager is crap. But they've got a relatively easy group so that gives them some time to play together and train together and build some chemistry. So I wouldn't read too much into the Iceland game.
