Catching up on this thread. State of it. Don't think Rooney got half as much stick for his dad bod as Shaw has. Rooney probably got more leeway because of what he had been doing on the pitch.

Luke Shaw is close to signing a new five-year contract at Manchester United worth £160,000-a-week. The England left-back is set to become the highest-paid defender at Old Trafford having finally won over José Mourinho during a season in which he has been the club’s most consistent player. Mourinho has frequently singled out Shaw for criticism in the past, questioning his physical fitness and mental strength, but tension between the pair has eased this season as the 23-year-old has established himself as United’s first-choice left back. Talks over a new contract have been going on for several weeks and both parties are close to reaching an agreement over extending a deal that expires next summer. Shaw won United’s player of the month award for August and September and appears to be reaping the benefits of improved fitness. His decision to take one of United’s strength and conditioning coaches, Gary Walker, with him on a holiday to Dubai last summer impressed Mourinho who has urged the club to sign off the new contract as soon as possible. Shaw will gain a significant pay-rise on his existing wages and go beyond Marcos Rojo as United’s best-paid defender. His improved form for United has also seen Shaw recalled to the England squad by Gareth Southgate, although he has missed this month’s matches against Croatia and Spain after sustaining an injury in United’s win over Newcastle United ten days ago. The new deal completes a transformation in attitude between Shaw and his club manager. In his sixth competitive game in charge, Mourinho singled out Shaw for criticism over his poor positioning for Watford’s second goal in their 4-2 win over United. Such was Mourinho’s dismay towards Shaw that he could not bring himself to say his name afterwards. “Our left back is 25 metres distance from [Nordin] Amrabat instead of five metres,” he said. “This is a tactical but also a mental attitude.” In April last year, Mourinho said that Shaw was United’s fourth-choice left back behind Ashley Young, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian. “I cannot compare the way he [Shaw] trains, the way he commits, the focus, the ambition [to the rest]: he is a long way behind,” Mourinho said. Then there was the biggest criticism of all: that Shaw was not intelligent enough to play for United. “He [Shaw] had a good performance, but it was his body with my brain,” Mourinho said. “He was in front of me and I was making every decision for him.” The relationship has improved since then, with Mourinho sending Shaw a text in the summer saying: “I know what you can do. You can be the best but you’ve just got to work on a couple of things.” Shaw is now set to be rewarded for carrying on the hard work with a new, bumper deal. www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/sport/luke-shaw-set-to-sign-five-year-manchester-united-deal-at-160k-per-week-tpzrbxzjw

Marcos fucking Rojo is currently United's highest paid defender. That alone is a sackable offence. Woodward, the brilliant negotiator.

Never buy a player based on having a decent world cup. Case in point Rojo.

It's good that he's getting the new contract - but why the fuck is he getting an increase of £60k to £160k/w. It's fucking ridiculous.
The game is so fucked up nowadays. It's no surprise so many youngsters don't reach anywhere near their potential given the money involved.

Every agent will be walking in expecting ridiculous money. The gravy train is open for business! There is absolutely no way Shaw would be getting that at say Spurs or Arsenal and they would've been likely destinations for him.

Unfortunately, it seems like we've reached the point where the one thing we can guarantee players now is money.

Correct, but it is a very recent and very lucrative example for an agent to quote.

Rooney's wages were eye watering long before Sanchez rolled into town.
