£31m though mate. Since when did 8 goals justify that fee. Its another example of the club making a complete hash yet again, he may turn out to be mega but thats a big if. It's alot of money for a kid that hasn't played that much top flight football in france never mind international football. whilst i won't argue the fee is high, factors such as potential, speed, strength, technical ability, age and as you said the major lack of strikers that are available anyone half decent is valued really high. Didn't we flog someone like that to Arsenal last year for half the price? (maybe the "strength and technical ability" makes up for the difference?)

Time will tell but he hasn't looked a world beater so far, same old issues. Misses a lot of chances, manager would rather play giroud which says a lot and he has had a few injuries. All that being said I never wanted him sold

All right. We pinned our tail to Martial, a 19 year old who played for motherfucking Monaco. Couple that with our other big attacker, Memphis, who so far has not found his feet in the Prem. Who are we? Martial, no pressure, but now you have to hit the ground running and you will need to electrify our attack on your first game. No pressure, lad.

Its a panic buy. You don't spend that money on a player people have barely heard of. The people in the know in French football thing he has real potential but they can't understand the transfer fee. Welbeck had pace and power but he couldn't finish and his movement wasn't great.

Read a few places that there were agreements for Martial in place for next summer, similar fees - perhaps we paid a little more, but the guy is clearly highly regarded.
Glad we signed him, regardless of whether people think it's a panic buy.
What's happened with the DDG deal?!

Have we signed him though? And why would we wait until next summer? We need a bloody striker now!

What's happened with the DDG deal?! no news yet on DDG and i suspect it won't be until about 1pm we get anything definitive. adebayor, austin arguably, balotelli would fall more into what i would call a panic buy. regardless of kid not being that well known in England, i would say he is far from a panic buy, it seems more like the opportunity has been put forward to do a deal earlier (as you said Jay) and we have simply done it. to be honest i'd be more optimistic on him being a success under a different manager though but thats another story

If thats true, he did a huge favour for Monaco by signing a new deal that would have kept him til 2019. Contrast that with the DDG situation

LVG said mystery striker iirc.. Monaco losing in CL play off fucked them financially by all accounts. Just like Depay, maybe we acted swiftly? I wouldn't class this as a panic buy but an expensive high risk high reward gamble.

This is irrelevant, but since we were going to sign him yesterday I purchased him in my Fifa 14 Manager mode (I had just entered the 2019 transfer window I think).
He's 22 years old, rated 84 even without a photo and his pace and acceleration are both 98, with finishing and long shots in the deep 80s.
Means nothing, but clearly he has been touted to have a big future by many.

This guy was on my radar purely because he cropped up in my scouting in last years Football Manager. Had all the stats I was looking for but I never did get a deal for him. I assume this is the deal LvG referred to about a 'surprise the media weren't talking about'. Exciting, I love these types of signings.

I assume this is the deal LvG referred to about a 'surprise the media weren't talking about'. Exciting, I love these types of signings. Yeah, reminds me of Hernandez, even though they aren't remotely similar. You only need to look at how succesfull his first season was with us to see how pace, timing of runs and instinctive positioning can have a massive impact. Hoping we've unearthed a gem! ALSO: "To be honest, yesterday [Sunday] on the plane, Wayne Rooney came to speak to me and asked me who Martial was, because the English press had started to speak," Schneiderlin told reporters at France's training base at Clairefontaine. "I told him he's a great player with great potential, who has played some good matches with Monaco last season and the the beginning of this. [HE IS GOING TO HOPEFULLY REPLACE YOU WAYNE] "I told him he is technical and powerful. A little like Therry Henry, even if it's the press who are making that comparison." The deal to take Martial to United will make him the most expensive teenager in the history of football, and Schneiderlin is keen to ensure that the 19-year-old does not feel the weight of his price tag when he arrives at Old Trafford. "The size of the fee? If he wants my advice, it is to ignore it," the former Southampton man added. "The media will talk a lot and will expect him to score many goals. But he must remember his qualities and play like he knows how. He can't be paralysed by it. I think everything will go well."

Eric has (apparently) spoken: 'Martial is France's biggest talent. In three years he will be worth 100 million'.
