If you are serious about winning a league you can't leave yourself open to having to use too many youngsters. The class of 92 was a freak so no point referencing that.
Mightyyez, 2 players for each position? Fate-temptingly small. Unless there are guarantees we won't have another crippling injury list, you are just asking for trouble.

Fair point, and the squad does really need more experience. I'm just hoping that it doesn't mean youth slips down the pecking order and becomes an infrequent, token gesture rather than a vital part of building the team. Jose has the record of severely ignoring his team's academy but it's only fair to give the guy a chance here.

I don't really see many players actually leaving given how thin the squad was after LvG. Mata is probably the most likely to leave and maybe some fringe players like Wilson and Januzaj in January, and maybe a few youth players. Next summer I'd imagine we'd see Bastian and Carrick on their way out and a few more too, after being given a season by Mourinho to prove themselves to him. For me it's kind of a double-edged sword. You don't want a repeat of the paper thin squad situation where a couple of injuries ruin the team but at the same time you don't want a big squad rammed with expensive talent stopping United's exciting youngsters from getting a look-in. Even worse is having your team rammed with expensive non talent stopping the youngsters from coming though.

But apart from Rojo arguably blocking CBJ (neither of whom is anywhere near as good as Shaw), what talented youngsters are being blocked currently? I'd like to see TFM in the side so RB might be his best option. Is it Darmian or Valencia blocking him there? Is he ready to be the CDM ahead of Carrick? Rashford isn't being blocked. Who are the others? Perreria? He should be playing 10 but do we know who is going to be that 10? I think it might be Herrrera.

I don't think the squad is that thin in terms of quantity, it is (was) thin in terms of quality in some areas. 3 positions have now been rectified presuming Mkhitaryan gets confirmed soon and I expect another cm to come in to further strengthen that area. In my mind we'll see a squad like this next season: Dave/Romero Valencia/Darmian/Varela Smalling/Jones Bailly/Rojo Shaw/CBJ Morgan/Carrick/Blind Herrera/Basti/TFM New cm/Fellaini/Rooney Mkhitaryan/Adnan/Lingard Ibra/Rashford Memphis/Martial One glaring omission there is Mata. I think if we play with a 4-3-3 he will be considered surplus by Jose. No way he'd play him on the right of this formation, nor do I expect he'd play him in midfield. Young would be handy to keep around but would only get games in a serious injury crisis and may spend too much time not even in the squad, which he may not want to do. So I expect he'll probably leave as well. Then I think Pereira, Mcnair and Wilson will probably be loaned out. People will probably disagree with my positioning of TFM but I don't see him as a holding midfielder, I see him as a full throttle, powerhouse, box-to-box cm in the future. To be honest I think he'll actually spend the next year or 2 covering for various positions before finally settling down in midfield.
Obviously I'd like to take Fellaini and Rooney out of the equation and swap them with another cm and Pereira but they're going to stay for at least another season, just have to accept it.
The only position I'm a little unsure about is central defence, as it stands we have the numbers but probably not the quality with Rojo being in there, who I thought was a certainty to leave. He may yet leave with a new central defender being brought in. As much as I think Blind and TFM can and will provide adequate cover for that area, it's really not sensible leaving yourself with 3 recognised central defenders for a long hard season.

It's early days so anything can happen but i haven't seen anything in TFM's game to suggest he'll be a box to box player (I saw a few games for the Dutch underage sides as well) in the future. He's played mainly as a CB when I saw him, and a very good one. He's a decent passer of the ball, no more that that. Never saw him shoot much, play tricky one touch stuff etc. But he has a built in sense of danger, can tackle like a train and knows how to play the game simply. Everything I'd want in a midfield destroyer.
Although, what is a box to box player really?

Just a hunch that he has more to offer than sitting deep, breaking up play and making a simple lay off. I think he's good enough on the ball and could get better, bags of energy and speed to get up and down the pitch and the strength to intimidate the opposition in doing so. I think when he plays at right back he looks a lot better on the ball and going forward than I originally thought when I'd just seen him play at centre back, so I'd be interested to see if he could translate that to play in the centre of the park.

Fucking Rooney, at last. That press conference has given me hope. I just hope this isn't another false dawn for the Rooney exit camp. I convinced myself that Van Gaal would ditch him, but nothing came of it. I know Mourinho is a different beast altogether but I can't allow myself to get to excited just yet. The Chinese rumours have died down as well which is especially disheartening.

We have a paper-thin squad as it is so no way will we sell half those players. It would be insane. We'd need to buy another 6 or 7 on top of what's already come in The cut-off point for me is Blind. Definitely want everyone before him [in my list] gone, and want those after him to stay, with Mata being the one player mooted that I absolutely do not want us to sell.

Before listing players, I think we should take a look in the position vs players available ratio. Goalkeepers: De Gea, Romero, J. Pereira Centre-Backs: Bailly, Smalling, Jones.* Left-Backs: Shaw, Borthwick-Jackson, Rojo, Joe Riley.* Right-Backs: Darmian, Varela.** CDM: Schneiderlin, Blind, Carrick, McNair, Fosu-Mensah*** CM: Schweinsteiger, Herrera, Fellaini Number 10: Mkhitaryan, Mata, Pereira**** Left-Wing: Martial*****, Memphis, Young Right-Wing: Valencia, Lingard, Januzaj Number 9: Zlatan, Rashford, Rooney *Not adding Blind here, he is CDM, although useful at LB. No non-sense of playing them out of position. ** Not adding Valencia here, he is RW. No non-sense of playing them out of position. *** I'm adding Big Tim here because it's where he has been the best imo, even showing signs he can play very well at the RB **** Rooney is a nine, maybe a nine and a half, but not a 10 ***** Martial has done a great job here plus we already have Zlatan and the Rasher What do I see looking at this: selling Darmian to get Pogba would be a mistake without adding a good right-back into this equation. Would be wise to either bring another CB or playing Tuanzebe every once in a while – after all, if big Tim is destined to play RB or CDM, we can't take him out of his position to hide something that we need. Another note: when Schweinsteiger gets injured, Herrera will play at every three days (PL/FA Cup/Europa/League Cup). Would be wise to bring in another CM, one that can actually keep the ball to rotate with Herrera. Valencia has been good on his last games and has kept an excellent form for Ecuador, yet shouldn't we get another RW? Mkhitaryan has said he is a number 10. There's not enough room for a massive clear out without getting too reliant on the U21s. Also, there's not enough room for Mourinho to ditch the youngsters as you can see. This is a make or break season for many of those players, if they don't raise their game, sell some in January.
