Just been talking to my cousin who lives in Castellon, just down the road from the stadium. He goes to all of Villareal's games, he says Bailly is 'a beast of a player'. Their fans are gutted he's going. How did they feel about the quoted 30m price? Worth cashing in on Bailly, or should have held on to him? Worth cashing in from their point of view, but he thinks we're getting a hell of a player considering his age. The fee could be a steal. He says PSG, Barca and City were desperate to get Bailly, so great work by Woodward he says.

wow we actually got it done. 30 mill is rather expensive but we needed a big, strong beast in the back to pair up with Mike 'the hairdresser' smalling. They will compliment each other well. Mou has an eye for these CB's also so i think he will be very good. Still though, considering the whole Zlatan deal is dragging on forever, amazed this is done so quick One beast replaces another

Watched a lot of Villarreal. My favourite team to watch in Spain, well, them and Vallecano.
The kid's good. He's error prone, see him vs Atleti when Torres stole the ball from him. But the missed him immensely against Liverpool. He would've relished the physical aspect of that game.
Someone compared him to Mangala which is unfair, as I still think he'll come good. But I think he's more akin to Kurt Zouma if you want to make lazy comaprisons.

Not to be a negative nancy but I'd not really bought into the idea of bringing in a 22 year old CB, albeit one who's obviously got great physical upside. Mike's had 2 solid seasons, but the last few months haven't been great, and I think we'd benefit from a more mature Manolas type of CB. Bailly does go to ground a lot which is good on the action replay when it pays off but he's got the odd error in him. If we had Smalling and a steady old head at the back I think Bailly'd be a great signing as one of Europe's best up n' comers, but if he's expected to slot straight in then I expect squeaky bum syndromes.

He was saying to me of course he's made some mistakes during games, what defender hasn't. He says the 'error prone' label is unfair. He says the positives regarding the kid hugely outweigh the negatives. Also he says the Torres situation was blown out of proportion a bit, not a fair view. Same thing happened to Vidic a while back.

I like the fact it's another deal that sets us up for the future. There's a hell of a lot of quality young players in this squad and he'll add to that.
The fact some other big clubs were circling is a sign we're getting a talented defender. He's also coming playing for a manager second to none in terms of working with defenders in my opinion.

I'm pleased with the inevitable signing, the squad badly needs power, pace and strength in it and he brings all three. There's lots of comments about him being a bit error prone but hopefully that would be ironed out with experience.
That's my only concern though. Experience. Smalling is getting more of it but I think another thing our defence (and team in general really) suffers with is dealing with pressure. Nearly every game the opposing team would have a good spell and United would flap around making mistakes, last-ditch tackles and was often bailed out by Dave or poor finishing. No-one would keep their composure and organise things at the back, there was no leadership or cool heads. That's something I think that needs to be addressed, an experienced but not-yet-creaking head at the back who commands and assures.
Again, I think he'll be a great signing but I don't think he's the last piece in the puzzle for our defence. Plus he'll sod off for the African Cup of Nations too, so that's also an issue.

June 8th. First signing. Mourinho addressing weakness as he did at Chelsea. Get in.
