Is there any point in getting a 17" 4k screen in a laptop (mainly for gaming)? Or is it just a waste of money?

On this small screen you can't see much difference between Full HD and 4k, the scaling of the Windows UI is still a bit problematic, and in a serious game you can't use it in the native resolution, 4k anyway because there is no laptop in the world with strong enough graphics card.

I'd rather play 1080p with Max graphical settings than 4k at a lower setting.

Think I might go with the MSI GS65 Stealth (£1475) - Amazon link, TechRadar reviewHowever the Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 (£1775) is also tempting me - more expensive for a worse keyboard and 120hz vs 144hz but a 1080 instead of 1070 - Amazon link, TechRadar reviewWhat do you guys think? And thanks for all the help so far <3 Edit: Went for the MSI GS65. The Asus actually just released a new version that is 144hz and a GTX 1080 but it comes to over £2000 which is out of my budget.

My partner was playing Lego Jurassic World (hardly the most intensive game) and the MSI app said my CPU was running at 90 degrees. I had to google to check I hadn't got a faulty model. Now got this laptop cooling stand which is relatively quiet and not too intrusive. It keeps the laptop at least 10 degrees cooler which can be a huge difference. Otherwise the laptop is brilliant. Been replaying Fallout 4 with lots of mods which is great. It also only seems to get hot in more intensive games, so I think you can have FM etc. on your lap with no trouble, which is good because the laptop is very stylish and actually pretty portable for a gaming laptop.

90c is well below the max temp of the cpu so it should be fine really, it's usually 105c.

Move to Manchester and knock another 10c off that. You could probably remove the cooling fan and make it a bit more portable too.

100c in this case but that isn't the problem. The fast temperature changes will break some legs on the BGA packages sooner or later. Typically on the GPU or the video RAM modules but it can happen to the CPU too with these kind of temperatures.

Depends on the usage, the quality of the laptop and on luck. I have seen it in two years and in ten. Using the cooling stand is definitely a good idea. That 10c temperature reduction can save him a year or two.
