Haven’t we lost to Basel away before under fergie? Was wondering when this chestnut would come up. Been happening a lot this season, hasn't it - this 'hoodoo' at places. Anfield, Stamford Bridge, away to fucking Basel ... I have come to despise this line in sport. Not winning somewhere in the past is not an excuse for not winning there now. Poor performance . However. 12 points (+3 from second ) , +6 goal difference , playing cska at home/ fortress. Yeah we're qualifying first. That isn't really the point though. As Rio, Lampard and Gerrard all said after the game it's just about okay for results like this to happen now. Further into the competition though the sort of performances we have been putting in recently will have us found out. In Europe and the league. We're already miles behind city domestically. They have better players and play wildly better football. It disgusts me. So how have we got to this point and how do we address it? I've been waving over our two trophies last season papering over the cracks and not being that far away with the addition of 2-3 players. It's proberly somewhere in between. We need to move on more than 2 players though.

But when marquee signings are completely spineless or have absolutely no will to perform , the blame can't be laid at the feet of the manager. Not fully at least. Guardiola has been allowed to completely buy a whole new team in the space of 2 years. I'll throw blame at Mourinho for one thing. Fellaini.

No I'd blame him for keeping too many duffers in the summer. Too many passengers in this squad.

Guardiola has spent more, but IIRC it’s about £75-80m more. I’m not sure if we had spent £80m more in the past 18 months that that would have made the difference that is currently there. With the clear exception of Bravo, the cunt has annoyingly bought very well and improved (or maintained the level of) a lot of the players that were already there. We were 1 point and 1 place behind them when LVG and Pelligrini left. Looking at the squads we both had, ours wasn’t that far from theirs. It’s early days and we are in the title race still but it feels like we’re a lot further behind now. Edit: out of the starting XI vs. Leicester last weekend, 6/11 were there when Pep joined I believe, and 3/7 on the bench (including Aguero) were there too. So he’s certainly got in more than us, but if we swap out Sane for Aguero as a reasonable prediction of the team that will face us in a couple of weeks then it’s not totally his signings. Us being shit at selling definitely plays a role too. If you include sales in the budget differences between Pep and Jose in Manchester the gap is smaller than the £80m I said above I believe. Woodward really needs to be replaced on the transfers side of things.

Thats no excuse for us to be making do with duffers though.

Far to much shite left over in the squad and personaly i dont think jose has done to great for us in tye market with the buys, mhiki hasnt improved us lindelof clearly isnt ready, i realy do like bailey but i dont know there is just something about him, pogba has been class zlat was class last year but when hes in the team as are cf its just to slow and hoof ball, Lukaku goal record is superb but for 90 mil he should be more hes not a top 10 striker for me

Lukaku reminds me a bit of Rooney in that he goes through purple patches with goals then goes quiet. Miki has been such a dissapointing signing . I wouldn't be surprised if he goes in the summer unless we have a dramatic turnaround. His signings have been better than ok. It's some of the ones we have left over from Moyes and Louis that are still an issue. I thought he might have started Lindelof last night to try and get him a run of games to boost his confidence as that seems to be his problem.

I'd hold off on the desperation and post mortem until the end of December and see where we are. We've a massive run now until the end of Christmas in the PL and see who we get in the CL draw. We have players back, but still getting match fit, so if we can go on a really good run and keep it alive, we will no doubt strengthen in January and or the Summer.
It worries me that we seem to be falling into the same pattern as the last few years start well then fall off into inconsistency, but win a cup or so. The next 5 games up to and including City are a big test for us now

Cracks are starting to show in their squad, defensively. A few more injuries for them over the busy period and we could be right back up there with them just as our players seem to be coming back into the squad and back to match fitness.

Judging by some of the teams that could/will finish 2nd, we might be better off finishing 2nd ourselves.
EDIT:
We finish 1st - Potential opponents: Bayern, Roma, Juve, Sevilla, Shakhtar/Napoli, Porto, Real
We finish 2nd - Potential opponents: PSG, Barca, Besiktas.
