Ive not rated Jones for a long time so it's not like he's become a new scapegoat. The thought of going up against Europes elite with either Jones or Smalling makes me very scared. Neither are good enough at this level. They've had years to prove themselves. The thought of Tuanazebe or TFM missing out because of these two pisses me off. What level are you talking about? Premier League? Because Jones has proven hes good enough to play at that level by being one of the best CBs in the league this season. Champion’s League? Well we haven’t been in it much post Fergie so I’m not sure how he’s supposed to prove himself yet. He’s also England’s best CB so unless Southgate goes full Southgate he’ll be playing at World Cup Level too. I don't think he is one of England's best or the premier league's either so we'll have to disagree. Are you confident having him in against the best in Europe ? Honestly?

Vertoghen having an absolute mare by the way. So, you know, it happens.

Because he's been excellent in the main this season and why shouldn't he perform? Gary Cahill won a Champions League and Jones is far better. We'll have to disagree as you say. If you don't think think ones is one of even England's best CBs then I think we're miles away from each on this so may as well move on.

Not all of them great either. Gary Cahill has finally been found out. It took longer than I thought it would though.

He is absolutely England's best. Stones, Smalling, Cahill, Maguire, Keane. It's kinda slim pickings. Maguire seems to be getting some hype but I'm not seeing him consistently outperform Jones. Bar maybe two matches Phil has had a pretty good season. It is frustrating when we lose, but there's no denying we have kept 14 clean sheets and Jones has been solid. Replacing him with someone better is great and all, if there is someone out there then fantastic, get him in. But truth be told there aren't an abundance of fantastic defenders. Just look at City, they've bought a highly rated new one every year and how many of them have worked?!?

Put any kind of pressure on Jones and Smalling and they are all over the place. None of the other players are great either. Stones again is helped by the system he plays in. Put him under any kind of pressure and he looks timid. Cahill was lucky he had an excellent centre half next to him for so long. Maguire is probably the next overrated English man to join the club. Everton are rumoured to be ready to sell Keane. None of this lot are fit to lace Wes Brown's boots never mind Rio's. Johny Foreigner would be under a lot more pressure than this lot but the press cover their arses and then wonder why we fail to deliver at major tournaments. Obviously it's not just this lot. England go overboard generally in thinking we are a lot better than we are. That's my final word on S and J. They are different sides of the same coin. It seems Jones has a lot of supporters though which I can't agree with.

Football 365 quotes the Evening Standard “Alderweireld earns around £50,000 a week at Tottenham and contract talks have stalled“... It shouldn’t be extremely difficult to improve on what we have at CB Whilst I get where Stewart is coming from in terms of 'things other than CB are the priority', if there's even a sniff that this guy is interested, and with his release clause, getting him through the door should be a huge priority. He's the best CB in the Premier League and probably has at least four years at that level left.

Obviously I include Jones in that but Toby is gold standard.

all in all... we need a new CB. i think Jones is the best CB we have at the moment but hes still not incredible. much better than smalling but also less fit. seams to have turned bit of corner this year though.
i think were all in agreement that Smallin needs to go. him and possibly Rojo and definitely Blind.
this year is arguably the most important transfer window in a long time. we have set ourselves up and Jose should know exactly what we need.
- City are on fire and will still improve and increase the gap on us. - Liverpool will have a plan in place and they are not far off being a very good team. they could pass us this year and are playing far more exciting football. if they sort a couple of positions out then they will be a contender. - Spurs have there own issues down to finances and the ability to keep hold of players. if they do, they'll be very strong again next year and could overtake us. - Chelsea, well who knows.
we have a lot of dead wood that needs clearing regardless.
we need to get rid of: 1. romero - let him leave and bring though the younger keepers. if he wants to stay as back up then its fair enough and up to him. 2. Smalling 3. Rojo ? 4. Blind ? 5. Carrick 6. Fellaini 7. Zlatan
i would be keeping Young as a squad player and experience in the club
in: 1. CB - Alderwerield (sp) is an option but also injured lots. do we need another one of those? 2. RB 3. could argue a LB - Sandro/Ry Sess 3. CM 4. CM 5. world class attacker
i don't think that's too much to ask for either. we need to fix the glaring problems regardless of bedding in players. is cost even an issue ?

buying attackers at present for us is like buying a learner driver a ferrari. But that normally works out in the kind of thing people enjoy watching the outcome of.

Don't think RB is a priority since TFM seems to be the long-term successor. Valencia can hold the position down for another year or 2 before TFM can step in. Also speaking of dead wood, you forgot to add Darmian to that list! Would rather have Rojo stay as well, he's a useful squad player.
