You can add 'Champions League' to the title, that's the only thing missing now Bloody hell, done women, you can tell I've never done a matchday thread for ages

I was going to say that I long for the days when we played expansive football away in these games. Then I remembered that we probably didn’t very often.... we just seemed better for some reason. The Champions League was the one time we seemed to regularly be a bit conservative.

If we manage to keep a clean sheet and win I'd be well pleased.
Just happy to be able to look forward to these nights again tbh!

We actually sat back against Huddersfield and hit them on the break. They had 64% posession in some parts of the game. I had the feeling it was deliberate and it was executed well by Lukaku and Sanchez. I think we will be playing a lot like that in coming big games. THE 2-0 flattered them as it should have been 3 and probably 4.
We have the forwards suited to that game, I just don't think we have the personnel in MF to do it against the big teams in the CL, but neither do we have a MF that can control the game against better teams, so it may be the way forward for the rest of the season.
If we get through this round and a decent draw in the 1/4's then anything is possible!

I was going to say that I long for the days when we played expansive football away in these games. Then I remembered that we probably didn’t very often.... we just seemed better for some reason. There's no problem with playing a tight game away from home in Europe in normal circumstances. Win your home games and draw your away games and you'll get to the final every time. The problem I guess is a) Spurs, Liverpool and City have all looked good, with the latter two already through and the former two having their good results against strong opposition (in Spurs' case, stronger than ours). So if we want to say we're still as good as, or better than them, then we should be doing similar (which I think is winning, as Juve > Sevilla so a draw would still be not doing as well as Spurs IMO). Also, this season we've often played the football that in the past was reserved for European away days in all kinds of games, meaning we have less sympathy/understanding when it comes out in games like this. This issue obviously predates Jose, but that doesn't mean he has any less responsibility to fix it. That stuff means that, although say 1-1 wouldn't be a bad result, it would feel a bit worse depending on the performance because of external factors.

there is more than enough pace and skill in the front 3/4 to really take the game to them for 45 minutes and pop in 2/3 goals. there is more than enough about the players to come out in the second half and go at it again for 25 minutes if not 30, I'd understand just moving the ball around and being professional in the last 15/20 minutes so far as we are 2 or 3 goals up with a clean sheet.

I think we all know well enough that from here on in in this competition it matters not a jot what kind of performance we put it, it's entirely about the result. For reference go back and watch our away semi in Barcelona, where arguably our finest ever side played like the bastard child of a Jack Charlton/Graham Taylor international team.

Fuckin loved it too ;-) We played a lot of hard to watch football away in Europe over the years. As long as we keep playing in Europe I think I'll be happy. But boy the joy when it comes good eh !!! I'm happy with any away win in Europe. enjoy the game folks.
