This is the same France team that couldn't do the business , in spite of injuring Cristiano in the final. Nothing has changed . Yet they're somehow top 4 material? But the European Champions are somehow not as good as them ? That's just strange. Portugal to me are a very good example of things just somehow falling into place and them performing better as a collective than most other star studded teams. Argentina, Brazil, Spain and Germany for the semis ahead of Portugal any day. Portugal ended their Euros group stage with 3 points. They only proceeded because in the Euros, the third out of a group of 4 could go ahead, let's not pretend that they're suddenly semi-final material because of that Euro campaign or because Ronaldo's in the team. France may be immature, but they're a much better candidate for the semis than Portugal. Really doubt they'll lift the trophy any time soon but still. And you never know what to expect of Uruguay. With the exception of Greece then the Euro winners usually win the world cup around the same time don't they. Seems to go in cycles. Portugal always seem to go far anyway. Ronaldo has played two Euro finals and at least a couple of World Cup Semi's. I reckon they'll look like shit but knock out one of the big boys on the way to the late stages.

I want to know why nobody fancies Portugal to reach far at all?? They're the reigning European Champions. I have them as my sleeper team to be in the semis . So was Greece once. Probably second in their group, last 8 or QFs at best. Not comparable in any way.

It's only happened twice in 15 attempts that the reigning European Champions have went on and won the World Cup. France did it the other way around and won the World Cup first. Portugal were garbage in the Euro's. They managed to finish 3rd in a group containing Hungry and Iceland (any other year they are eliminated then), they squeezed past Croatia after extra time, beat Poland on pens and beat a shite Wales team (even bloody England beat Wales). No team is getting that fortunate again, no chance.

There's a fair chance they don't make it to the quaters but I still give them a solid chance of winning.

So no luck involved in a penalty shoot out?
OK.

So no luck involved in a penalty shoot out? OK. Why do England lose every single penalty shootout? It's not because they are unlucky.

Iam picking Spain to win it , DDG in goal ,a midfield packed with talent and creativity (ascensio ,isco, silva, busquets, alacantra and of course iniesta),defenders with experience at the biggest stage like ramos and costa as striker.Looks like they have the proper mix of talent experience youth and that little bit of cuntishness ! I do back France, but if not them then I see Spain. Germany looked very meh yesterday. France do have a fantastic squad- probably the best in raw skill , may blow few teams away but will they step up when the pressure is really really on ? (think PSG). Spain (and Germany too) have the guys who have done it on the biggest stage.

So no luck involved in a penalty shoot out? OK. Luck is exaggerated in the context of penalty shootouts imo. The Germans rarely ever lose a penalty shootout while England are horrible at it . That's not all luck. Mentality and skill have a large part to play. The luck aspect affects only the keeper, as in, if he guesses the right way to dive. In fact, nowadays the top level keepers are known to meticulously study opposition penalty takers to spot patterns , enabling them to guess correctly. All these aspects are eroding luck from penalty shootouts. Apart from that, a skilled and decisive penalty taker should score 9/10 times . A good combination of power, accuracy and placement will almost always result in a goal unless the keeper guesses correctly.

At the end , Portugal were standing there, holding the trophy. They rode their luck , scrapped, fought and took their chances. Sometimes you need that to win.

Be interesting to see how the new retrospective sanctions, for players actions in game, will be handled.
Could be a record number of cards if they follow the rules to the word.

Doesn't matter to the trophy already won, but if they play like that again, they won't reach the semis of the current World Cup. The WC is a bit harder.

Had we had both of them with the way we were playing I honestly think we'd have done a lot better, possibly even beating them. Can't believe they beat France in the final 2bh. Portugal seem to do well in tournaments but really shouldn't be allowed to.
