No sympathy whatsoever for Messi. Fuck his tears. If he wanted this much to stay and end his career at Barca, he should've played for less money, not 50m a year or whatever he wanted. Mate, you're just wrong on this in every way. Why is it that people assume this deal fell through because of Messi or anything to do with him? As Laporta very clearly and publicly stated, he signed a 5 year contract but was accepting pay for only 2 of those years. La Liga blocked it. The only reason Messi isn't at Barcelona is because they are in such a hole financially. They should have sold him last year but their previous club President was an idiot so they're now here in this position. Yes we all hate Messi and Barcelona but to agree contractually to get paid for only 2 years out of 5 is fucking laudable in every sense. Personal feeling has nothing to do with it. Especially when I see we've got some proper oxygen thieves at this club. It's one thing to hate the guy but let's not become one of those people who peddle untruths to push forward an agenda. We're not scousers. EDIT: I'm also not sure on that 50m a year thing. Even with PSG he'll get 35m EUR a year confirmed as per Romano.

Harsh By all accounts he agreed to 50% pay cut, he has made them as much money as they have paid him. Who knows this could be the gift and the curse for the club, Messi gone means a fresh start, new ideas etc Opportunities for others

I think Laporta and manager are actually quietly happy

Non-factual rants give internet points after all.

The rest of those players should really have taken 70% wage cuts to make the deal happen, without Messi they would not be paid the exorbitant wages they receive at Barcelona or any other club. Crazy situation they find themselves in and I’d be interested in the fan take once the season kicks off

Maybe if Messi wasn't a tax-dodging drugs cheat, and if this wasn't a gigantic financial fuck up of Barca's own making, I would have some sympathy.
Then again, probably not.

Yeah, I'm no mad Messi fan, but I'm not sure how a club getting itself in such an unprecedented financial mess is suddenly his fault?
No one forced Barca to pay Messi the wages he wanted. If his contract demands were utterly insane, then sell him. Sure the fans would lose their minds but so what? They'd get over it. And maybe then Messi would have seen no one could afford to pay him the kind of money he was asking, and he would agree to stay at Barca for more "reasonable" money.
It's also not just Messi, even without him on the books they are fucked, because they've blown huge amounts on player signings and their wages.
It's gross neglect and incompetence, how they've mismanaged the financial situation is beyond compare. But Messi should just effectively take the blame and play for free?
How many of us would do that? If we told our bosses every year we wanted to double our money and they just kept saying "Yup, no problem, here's the contract" then suddenly cried skint because of the wage bill and we were expected to now work for free? Fuck that.

if we do lose Pogba we should be putting in a strong bid next summer on De Jong and try take advantage of Barce being skint
the problem i have with loaning Martial to Inter is they already owe us money. whats to say they wont back out of the sale next year or just not be able to afford him ?

Are we totally sure they owe us money from Lukaku? Might it just be the structure of the deal? If they backed out of a loan to buy I imagine three be a fairly stringent fine to stop others from doing it.

Yeah I'm not convinced. I think they are definitely having to pay in installments because I cannot imagine Inter being able to pay £80m or whatever it was upfront.
The rumours seem to suggest they missed a bonus payment in January which triggered a clause that made the remaining amount outstanding immediately due. Italian reports dispute this saying the bonus was paid on time. My guess is that with the pandemic we are probably giving them a little leg room but they aren't dramatically behind and there is no question of them having to pay the full outstanding amount and we will continue to receive our scheduled payments just like any other creditor.
My problem with loan to buy is that with Martial's high wages and his crappy season last year and the state of their finances I cannot see them committing to a high transfer fee. We would be better off seeing a loan as an opportunity to put him on the shop window. If he is a hit in Italy we'd have a decent chance of getting a good price for him next summer. And we could also ask for a loan fee of say £5-£10 million or so.

We were still owed most of the fee at the end of this season. You would hope with winning the Serie A Inter would have paid a decent whack. For Martial or any loan w. Obligation to buy the penalties would depend entirely on the terms. It's usually a fixed part-payment of the agreed purchase price.

I’ve seen a lot of rumours about them owing us money for Lukaku, but nothing concrete in terms of how much, beyond the sell-on clause anyway. I can also remember the rumour that they would have to stump up the remaining amount after missing an instalment at the turn of the year, but I can’t recall if there was any resolution to that.
