The cbs might be shit but I've seen pub teams better organised at the back then we are, and that is well and truly on the manager and coaches

To an extent. There's no doubt we should have a better centre back, but the best managers improve what they have and make a team more than the sum of their parts. We have never been anything other than less than the sum of our parts under Jose IMO. I'm not saying Klopp, Pep or Pochettino etc. would make him the next Maldini but they've done much better with what they have than Jose has with what he has. Individual mistakes aren't on Jose. But he has bought two expensive centre backs, not really improved them or the ones that were already here despite being famous for improving defenders, and gone back to Smalling. So the fact Smalling's been atrocious in this opening 15 minutes isn't his fault, but he has to take a fair share of blame in the wider situation IMO. Disagree with that. A manager cannot always improve a player. Of the player's level is such, he'll stay there even if Arrigo Sacchi takes time off retirement to coach him. Smalling's level is that. How many players did Fergie bring in that turned out utter duds ? How many did he fail to improve ? It's a long , long list. Agree that a manager can't always improve a player. I don't think any manager would improve Smalling enough. The problem is Jose has barely improved anyone. I reckon only about two or three players have got better under him, and of those only Lingard was genuinely unexpected IMO - maybe Shaw as well. A better manager wouldn't improve Smalling, but they might have improved Bailly etc.

Why should a 28 y/o defender be expected to take responsibility for his own actions on the pitch when you can just blame the manager and hope the defender learns a lesson when the new manager turns up. I mean it's worked so far for Smalling and co after 4 managers. Maybe #5 will be the one when it finally sinks in?

Pogba chasing a player winning a tackle? There is still hope.
Zero shots on target. We will have to improve on that. Let’s start with getting in their half

So is Smalling's absolutely rubbish defending Mourinho's fault again? Nonsensical defending. To an extent. There's no doubt we should have a better centre back, but the best managers improve what they have and make a team more than the sum of their parts. Yeah but we also have 300M worth of midfield players, who don't seem to be able to pass or move the ball or hold onto it, or track like a top team either. Bournemouth have over run us so far again in MF. They have moved the ball well and sprung traps

Ah yes, the notion that a new manager will turn Smalling into Baresi. Wondered how long it would take for that to be said. Good job the club didn't stop Fergie from buying other players when his signings didn't work too. Great way to run a club. I literally said that Smalling wouldn't turn into Maldini. Can you read? If you couldn't it would actually explain a lot about what you post. You said you would expect them to do a lot better with them. How exactly do you see Smalling improving after all these years? Maybe that explains a lot about what you post too.
