I think everything about today's game has been pretty much covered by everyone so no need to repeat, but I'm thinking come the end of the season Madrid us possibly Bayern maybe even juve might all be looking for new managers, I honestly worry who we would actually get and who would turn them teams down for us at the minute.

LVG is the one I like the most - more for his press conferences than anything. I like Jose too though. I think both were excellent managers past their prime (LVG more than Jose but both nonetheless). I liked Van Gaal. His transfers were generally rank though. His bizarre elevation of Rooney was his downfall. Sold off all his competition and had we not signed Martial right at the end of the transfer window we would have been in even more shit.Moyes was an utterly bizarre appointment. I remember reading somewhere that when Fergie was first rumoured to be retiring and they were considering Sven he was miffed. Even Sven after Fergie would have been a better option than Moyes. I think Fergie was blindsided by Moyes. No other explanation I can think of. How come Mourinho gets constantly defended for transfer activity because of the board but this kind of stuff was all LVG's fault?

He sold Van Persie, Hernadez and Welbeck and it was obvious Rooney was well past his best but his only replacement was a last minute unknown. That's bad planning . No one made him sell all those forwards will no back ups . Jose's biggest issue imo is his transfers by his standards haven't been that great.

Tbf welbeck was not good enough rvp was a shadow of himself and Hernandez is still ofside now I think, it's the same situation now tho with all our shite cbs I would be happy to sell them all because none are good enough and promote some youth until we bought proper replacements. Also I think lvg always had the idea to play youth players and give them a chance which maybe why he got rid of those 3 too

But apart from the Falcao signing I don't remember us being seriously linked with any forwards. Martial was a last ditch unknown.

I agree with what Stewart said earlier, we just need new ideas. I genuinely think the majority of United fans would be patient with a new manager if he was trying to implement positive attacking football. Saw an article during the week which said when you actually look at it, we brought in three of arguably the most defensive managers in world football in Moyes, LVG and Mourinho. Also, saw a good phrase saying that we're like a ship that has its anchor down permanently. For a club of our status, everything post-Fergie has been fucking ridiculous. I knew things would be bad but I didn't expect us to be in the mire as much as this. I can remember the 70's, 80's as a United fan, an FA Cup now and again but that was it. We're sleep walking into that again by persisting with this bollocks football from Jose. I really don't know how anyone could describe LVG as a defensive minded managerial appointment. His sides in the past have played some utterly beautiful attacking football.
I don't think our performances under him were down to him wanting us to be more defensive, they were partly down to him not being able to properly implement his "filosofee" and partly his "filosofee" being outdated, particularly in this league.
I still maintain he was forced to play Rooney and if he had his own way he'd have binned him off (for Eriksen if rumours were to be believed) and we'd have maybe seen a different and more productive LVG's United.
You obviously didn't see LVG's football previously described as like watching a baggage carousel at an airport. Sideways, backwards, sideways football. Rinse and repeat. LVG bagged good results now and again but the football was primarily as described above. Certainly wasn't free-flowing or attack minded, more downright boring, he was generally cautious.

LVG has had some pretty scathing things to say about us since he left, would suggest he had to deal with the same issues that people believe Jose has, as well as having to play a virtually undroppable Rooney.
As I alluded to earlier, I refuse to believe LVG wanted one of the worst players in the squad on the ball in his midfield. Jose gets credit for finally pulling the plug on Rooney but his hold over the club had reduced by that point and it was easier to make that decision, really don't believe LVG had that luxury.
Not making excuses for LVG here or remotely suggesting he should've been kept but just don't remember him getting the same strong defence that Jose gets, despite his results and quality of football not being too dissimilar.

The football was absolutely dire here under him, I don't remember saying anything different.
I'm disagreeing with the notion of him being a defensive appointment from the board's perspective. He has never been thought of as a defensive manager and I don't believe he, in his own mind sent a team out with a defence first mentality.
That didn't stop his football being utterly wank though.

All three managers have had their hands tied behind their backs under this current management. I think bringing in Zlatan massively helped Jose not just with goals but I think he pushed Rooney out somewhat and chipped away at his top dog status. Jose probably gets more leeway because despite having a poor season he did get to qualify for the CL in his first 2 seasons and second last season was our best ever finish since Fergie retired. I still think had Van Gaal managed top 4 in his second season Ed would have done a U turn and not hired Jose.
