Other than that you look abroad but I don’t really have anyone in mind for that kind of role.

if fighting on all fronts we would be playing shitloads of games, if we was actually winning things i think it would be easier to sell the idea of coming to be part of a squad rather then just to be a squad player, there is some good players in the prem mind you that will leave this summer for decent fees and would really improve our squad

If you can get a Maddison or Grealish for relatively cheap and convince them that being a squad player here is a good move for their career then fine but it’s hard to sell that. Particularly to Maddison as he’s a guaranteed starter at a decent enough club. Grealish may be easier to convince because of Villa’s position but at the prices being quoted it makes no sense and he strikes me as the type who might kick up a fuss if things don’t go his way. It’s why I like Cantwell. He’s the younger of the 3, less high profile. Would relish the opportunity to play amongst some of these players and get better, there is definitely some decent ability there to start with too. That’s the thing though. There isn’t a chance of getting Grealish or Maddison cheaply, even in a peculiar market. Grealish is going to be a minimum of 50 and Maddison will cost more than Maguire. That’s why a player like Cantwell makes sense to me.

Maddison isn't an option for us, for the reason you've mentioned. Grealish should not be an option for us because he is not worth the money they will want. I do not know much about Cantwell so cannot form an opinion. What about our academy? Do we have any players who could realistically serve as understudy and grow into a squad role?

Garner and maybe Levitt for that midfield role.

ESPN
Manchester United have made an offer of €65 million for Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar, according to Tuttosport.
United have been targeting a number of centre-backs in 2020, and, in particular, the dependable Slovakian is a player who has been continually linked with a move to Old Trafford. However, the Reds' chances of a move appeared to have been scuppered when Skriniar put pen to paper on a new deal at the San Siro.
However, Tuttosport suggests Inter may now consider selling Skriniar as a result of the 25-year-old struggling to fit into Antonio Conte's back three. Skriniar has had a disappointing spell in the past few months and, as a result, his asking price might be lower than it was six months ago, which is why United have made their new offer.
United aren't alone in their admiration for the player, though, with rivals City also interested as well as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, which means Inter will have to evaluate any offers they receive this summer.
He’s a great defender imo. Vidic like.

How the bloody hell can a “Journo” write a piece like this? Koulibaly used the standard “we’ll see what happens-you never know” defence that they all use.
Kalidou Koulibaly pours cold water on Liverpool, Man Utd links
Kalidou Koulibaly has insisted that remains focused on his time with Napoli amid persistent speculation linking the defender with a move away this summer. Koulibaly has been linked with several high-profile clubs having starred in the heart of the Napoli defence, with Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona all rumoured to be weighing up approaches. A recent report claimed that Liverpool and Man United had made contact with Napoli regarding a proposed summer move, but Koulibaly has affirmed that he remains committed to the Serie A outfit. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Senegalese centre-back said: "In football, you never know what happens. I never spoke to Napoli about leaving. If we have to find a solution, we will find it, but I have never talked about the transfer market. "I also read in the newspapers about my future. But I only want to think about playing, I am 100% [committed to] Napoli and it bothers me to be linked, every day, to this or that European club. "We will see what the president (Aurelio De Laurentiis) will decide and if he proposes to extend my contract, that would allow me to end my career here. "At the moment, I still have a three-year contract and I am not thinking of anything else but Napoli." Koulibaly, who has turned out 19 times in the league this season, would supposedly cost in the region of £72m despite the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic. There’s loads of clips (as there is of all footballers) on YouTube ,but he looks really good.

Definitely, especially as Ed will offer almost nothing for them ,they’d be good additions to the squad, when Jones , Lingard etc have been sold.
