If Ole didn't have us playing half decent football from time to time he'd have absolutely nothing to offer us. Half the time, you are being far too generous there.

If Ole didn't have us playing half decent football from time to time he'd have absolutely nothing to offer us. City would have destroyed West Ham last night. And we saw those two again last night Lindelof and Maguire both gave the ball away in an easy game neither were under pressure where a better side would punish us for it, both need replacing.

Part of the issue with both is there is no consistent serious competition for their spot.

Just on Donny...either he isn't very good or he needs a run of games...
I prefer to believe the latter...however, it seems that his teammates don't trust him with the ball...they seemed to actively avoid passing to him at times...
As soon as Bruno came on, they were pinging the ball to him every time...
So, maybe Donny should play in a slightly more withdrawn role and have Bruno on at the same time...I think Donny could be versatile enough...

Granted donny probably might be low on confidence therefore he ain’t looking his normal self but even in the early days I have seen nothing to suggest he should play when Bruno is rested. I think donny is best suited in the 2 man pivot. Good passing, intelligent and reads the game well.

He makes runs into spaces where he can’t be found with the ball. I’m sure he’s a better player than we’ve seen, but sooner or later he has to make an impact. Mata barely plays but when he does he contributes more than Donny has in his cameos. I think sometimes you become a better player by not playing. The way people were talking online about “unleashing” him after the Pogba injury was laughable really. I hope he comes good next season and we start to see a bit more of what he’s about.

May be , may be not. Remember when we had that 1-2 loss against Sheffield ? I am sure many would have thought city will put 5 or 6 past them , but they didn't , they eked out a 1-0 win next game. Its always difficult when 1 team decides to put 10 men behind the ball for 90 mins , especially when we are without our most creative players Bruno and Pogba for most part.

Exactly , I too am inclined to believe it is a lack of confidence than lack of quality. But he needs to change his game , Right now he is behind Bruno , Mata in no.10 and behind Pogba ,Scott in midfield role.

Donny has zero confidence at this moment. Watch how he moves (of lack thereof), and watch what he does with the ball when he has it. It lacks of creativity, and bravery.
I don't know if it's the set of instructions that the coaches has asked him to either adopt, or play for those particular games, but he's often in places that does not encourage open, quick play up, or plays into dead channels.
If you ask me, it's a mixture of reasons. I also think it's down to how he is being personally managed. He is a young lad finding himself, in a foreign country and league, amidst foreign, more famous players. Someone puff up his chest and guide him through it. Not make him sit out for 120210 games, sub on for 360 seconds per game and then expect him to perform on that one night he gets a night out. He is definitely going to feel he is not good enough!
I don't know how to play him to ensure the best comes from him - that's because I'm a spectator, but that's also why you have a Manager and his Team of Coaches to figure this shite out (along with other things).

Players become a worse player when only given sporadic appearances and the expectation of directly replacing the only talisman. Van de Beek isn't a Fernandes type. He's more of a Xavi or a Modric. Knits the attack with quick thinking and clever movement. He doesn't play enough and when he does we're asking him to play the wrong way. I'm starting to wonder if we just aren't a club for that sort of player. Veron never really shone, Berbatov could never really fit, Kagawa certainly didn't and we basically killed his career, we have completely wasted Mata.

Our next four games are West Brom (A), Sociedad (A), Newcastle (H), Sociedad (H).
Van de Beek should be playing in all four of them in the role Pogba had before his injury. Absolutely no need for both McTominay and Fred to be starting the PL games at least, but even if they do then Donny could and should still play the Pogba role in the midfield diamond that has brought us some good results this season.
A run of five starts in a row would give a much better opportunity to judge what he can offer for the remainder of this season.

Those four, especially Berbatov and Mata, are some of my favourite players over the years, but none truly consistently shone here. Mata in particular has been such a waste, what a player.
