Yeah it was a mature and disciplined performance. We didn't let the spoiler tactics of the referee and opposition players get to us. And thanks to the second goal we are very much in control of the tie. Bit unfair to Mason. Number 9 isn't his usual position for us and he didn't get much in the way of service. Shame Cavani is unlikely to stay another season as he'd be really helpful for Mason's development. Leaves us with a bit of a dilemna in the summer. Do we buy a right winger with the intention of moulding Greenwood into a number 9? Or do we stick with Greenwood on the right and bring in a proper number 9? Maybe with Cavani leaving Ole feels its best to give Mason a run as a number 9 to see whether he looks like he can grow into the role next season and provide Martial with some competition in case Martial has another stinker of a season? Players today as so fucking limited or there forced into limited roles. Mason can definetely play centrally, he can finish and has the pace, he just needs to realise that hard work pays off in that area and improve his movement. He cant play like Cavani because hes a midget and theres little chance of him physically over powering any centre halves. He needs to be more like a Vardy or Aguero type, and focus on outworking them and pulling defenders into places they dont want to be. Between him, Rashford and Martial, they cant all play on the wing. Something has to give if they want a good career at the club. If mason can transition into that role, hes a nailed on starter because quality strikers seem beyond us right now.

Anytime I watched him in the reserves that’s where he played (and played exceptionally). He’s playing on the right currently as it’s the easiest way for him to get on the pitch and presumably he’s been told to do it as we decided not to address the position during the summer. I think he’ll end up as our striker. As you say, the top ones are beyond us seemingly and it’s his position naturally. As an aside, he’s just under 6 foot and still growing. Midget might be pushing it!

im not 100% sold on him yet i had to go back through the thread to make sure you were actually talking about greenwood. 3rd top scorers for teenages behind Rooney and rashford and will most likely over take them and being played out of position to help him develop. probably isnt ready to lead the line but being not sold on him, thats insane. Let’s just see how he pans out over the next 3 or 4 seasons to see if he fulfils his potential

Yeah I can see the sense of giving him a run of games as a number 9 especially if Cavani is leaving end of the season. For the amount we'd have to spend to buy a quality number 9 we could instead buy a quality right winger and holding midfielder and have some spare change to put towards a central defender and that would improve us a lot more as a team.

Over the next 3 summers? Because this isn’t happening in one window with Woodward.

Mason is a striker. Getting an RW in is more important than ever. Our front three until 2027 or so should be Rashford - Greenwood - Sancho. Young, exciting, English (I don't care about that last one but Ole does and the best RW option is English anyway).

Agree, but I would throw in that we have a heap of other young players too, I'd love to be able to say none of the above's positions are safe (this is in the 'United have signed Sancho' universe) because Hugill or McNeill have continued their ridiculous scoring records up and are banging on the first team door, Elanga and/or Shoretire have continued their development in the wide areas, and then there is Diallo too of course. Absolutely nothing is guaranteed in football where young players are concerned, course not. But there is a lot of young talent buzzing around, and all at that age where they could start getting a look in (Shoretire and Diallo already played for the first team for instance).

Didn't realise you had put a full stop after sancho , thought you had well and truly lost it wanting Young back
