We need a third midfielder in there who isn't Bruno, so we either play the diamond or he gets dropped.
Play a midfield trio of Matic/Fred, McTominay and vdB with Bruno ahead in a diamond, or the same three with two of Sancho/Greenwood/Elanga on either side of Cavani.

That midfield will get overrun and carved up. Scot is not really a DM, Bruno is not known for that nor is donny. We are not city where we keep the ball and pass it around nicely and attack all day so really i think you need a DM, a box to box player and an attacking mid in the flat 3 If we are playing a diamond as Rangnick mentioned in the post presser i think you need all three still but then you can get away with maybe 2 attacking mids so far as one is intelligent enough to know when to push up and when to drop back or when to simply sit (incoming donny). My big issue with the diamond as Rangnick mentioned is that we have a few winger/forwards so what happens to them? Ha, completely forgot about Sancho too, that's how much he's been lighting the place up obviously. Look, i'm not saying that should be THE line up, you can switch that up how you like but bottom line is we get overrun like fuck, the midfield needs to be improved but for now you could play a 3 in there and get more balance and be able to transition better from the back to front. And with the cart horse Maguire not at the back then you should be able to play further up the pitch. I've also noticed recently how shit slow we are, where has the pace gone? and we're quite often outmuscled in the 50/50's etc. There's so much wrong with it all but at least set a formation out that will at least allow some semblance of control. If that means leaving certain players out to suit the formation then so be it, maybe some will get a jolt by realising they have to fight for their spot (doubtful i know) I think many people like you ate the beginning of the season were calling for a 433, i was but i was also of the opinion MCT was not a DM. i Then tried telling myself if city can do it why can't we but then i realised Ole was the manager not Pep. But I get you mate

I dont think formation is the issue anymore , 4231 is good enough and fits most of our players , we just need to get 2 quality players who can play the 2 man midfield. Main issue is our players lack of fitness and their pathetic attitude. Slightest hint of trouble and they down tools. Formation isn't the issue, the recruitment of the players is massive problem at the club.

Yeah agree with this, Midfield is a big issue especially someone that can do the carrick/matic role (sit deep, break up the opposition, head up and release our attackers). The players likely are fit but like you said the attitude is pathetic. We score a goal and down tools, we concede and down tools. I do however believe albeit it's stating the obvious a smaller squad would help alot, we have far too many players and waiting til the summer to offload a few on a free is pure folly, get em out now even for peanuts, something is better than nothing in this case.

We've had 3 coaches and different assistants in the last 4 years including Mourinhos last year, which was a disaster! If City Liverpool or Chelsea had had that level of sub standard coaching and disruption for almost half a decade their players would struggle too. It's not so much the formation, but the constant changing of styles and formation and demands. It's a combination of factors, all the blame lies at the feet of the Glazers and Woodward
