www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/62695557Manchester United: Harry Maguire not guaranteed to start because of captaincy, says Erik ten HagManchester United boss Erik ten Hag has praised "immense" Raphael Varane and says Harry Maguire will not play just because he is captain. Maguire, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea, was dropped for last Monday's 2-1 win against Liverpool. Instead, Varane partnered Lisandro Martinez in the heart of defence. "His profile, his stature or what he won already in the past shows he can really contribute to this team," Ten Hag said of France defender Varane. "For the team there's competition and we need that. We have to cover so many games and we can do that in several constructions and we can see from game to game what we need." The Dutch coach added: "We have options and [with] Varane his stature is immense." Maguire started Manchester United's first two games of the season - a 2-1 loss at home to Brighton and then a 4-0 defeat at Brentford. The 29-year-old was targeted for his poor form last season and also received some boos during a pre-season friendly with Crystal Palace in Australia. Ten Hag has already confirmed Maguire as his captain for this season but stressed that does not guarantee him starts. "I say that doesn't mean when you are captain that you are established to play always, especially not when you also have Varane in your squad," he added. Maybe he’s finally learning? Finally? He's been here for 4 league games, it took him 2.

To be fair the only mistake he's really made so far is the armband and that's probably because he wants to see who's good enough to take it next.
Unfortunately he's not going to please everyone all the time, especially with team selections. Give the fact we now have two games a week right up until the world cup he'll need to rotate on occasions.
In only a few games so far he's shown he can already make the tough choices other haven't in the past so that's enough for me.

Sorry, did ten Hag not say that and play Maguire in the first two games? Or is ten Hag so completely disconnected from world football that he didn't notice from Amsterdam that Maguire is a dreadful footballer? It isn't only '4 league games'.

I feel the same but the only positive rational I could muster is maybe he went in with an expected result like how Mourinho was pressured into giving Pogba the captaincy. He allowed it and Pogba predictably underperformed and it was short lived and Pogba never recovered from it. There must’ve been at least some pressure from the board to play Maguire. Maybe ETH gave Maguire enough rope to hang himself with in order to move the squad forward. Who knows.

No new manager is going to instantly come in and start gutting a squad, making drastic changes over night and dropping players instantly from the get go, especially when it has very little depth. It's not how it works. He has to show he'll give the players a fair crack and since has made certain changes based on those players not performing or fitting to a system. It's been 4 games and some are acting like it's been 4 months. People need to chill a bit and have faith in the fact he knows what he's doing.

ETH gave him enough time during pre-season, and the two initial games for Maguire to make an impression, unfortunately failed make the correct one in both games. I’ve NEVER seen him playing so haplessly, frequently out of position, flailing his arms about, (as if that somehow deflect attention) and spreading real panic across the defence. Excellent to see that Erik has no misplaced loyalty either. Varane, Martinez and Malacia are brilliant and have formed a really tight unit, Dalot hasn’t, apart from his cross yesterday, really wish he had though, but he’s awful for the most part damn him.

I reckon he gave him just enough rope to hang himself, and he obliged as expected. Keep digging out the manager though, when he's the least of our problems right now.

Only a trophy will convince me, our standards have been far too low of late which is understandable, but a £230m investment has to yield some silverware.

I thought the first two subs that ETH made and when he made it were spot on. Antony never was going to play 90 and it was smart to bring him off about 15 minutes into the second half and give CR7 some minutes. Having Fred come on for a wide attacking player in Sancho was brilliant as Arsenal we’re pulling McT away from the central defending area leaving our two CMs exposed defensively. Having Fred apply pressure between McT and the CMs was a fantastic tactical move stymying Arsenal and leading to our counter attack chances and final goal. A+ for ETH to make the adjustments needed for the win and with our limited bench…
