I think is a rude but necessary awakening for us.
Ten Hag deserves a lot of credit for putting together a makeshift team and system that has reversed a terrible start to the season. But Arsenal aren't a top team and Liverpool were far from their best so City is the first real test we have had.
Scotty and Eriksen aren't a world class central midfield. Eriksen has done well in a deeper central midfield role than he is used to which has allowed us to fit him and Bruno into the team and given us someone in midfield who can actually pass the ball forward. But he has been found out against Manchester City and we really need to buy a world class ball playing midfielder to play alongside Casemiro. Similarly Scotty has had some good teams and is a useful squad player to have but we need to get Casemiro up to speed.
Similarly we don't have a world class front three. Sancho has been doing a bit better this season drifting inside a bit to link up play but he isn't a world class winger. Antony will be a world class winger one day but he is still quite raw and will need to adapt to playing at a higher level. Rashford isn't a world class CF.
We need an upgrade on Dalot for sure. And it is a little worrying that if Varane gets injured we have to call on the likes of Lindelof and Maguire.
It was a bit foolhardy of Erik to try to go head to head with Manchester City. If this turns into any more of a rout then it will dent confidence. He should have gone more defensive. There might have been some merit to playing three at the back and playing Casemiro and Fred in midfield to try and spoil things and make it difficult for City to play.
The good thing is that City are a class apart and will run away with the league but we can still measure up against the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham so have a chance of finishing in the top 4 this season and perhaps getting stuffed will instil a dose of humility and leave Erik under no allusions that he keeps needing to press the board for more investment in the playing squad.

He’s a Villa player at best. |
