Pfft. Can’t even get into the England squad over Lewis Dunk. £5m or walk away.

I can never understand reports that say terms have been agreed with the player before a fee has been agreed with the selling club.

I like this kid. As long as we don’t let Everton take us for a ride I think he’ll be an excellent addition.

Young and English probably is well within SJR's comfort zones as he takes his first steps in the transfer market. Hopefully we will cast a wider net in the future but we could do a lot worse than Branthwaite.
Southgate probably did us a massive favour not calling him up for the England squad. It underlines the point that while he is very promising he is also raw and therefore Everton cannot expect top dollar.
And also means that we can see if we can do a deal with Everton while alternative CB targets are tied up with the Euros. And if Everton won't budget on their £70-80m valuation we can move on to other targets after the Euros.
And it is helpful we've agreed terms (which would not have probably been possible if he was focused on the Euros) as it puts pressure on Everton as the lad wants to join us and if thinks they are pricing him out of a move then they will have an unhappy player on their hands next season.

If I had a pound for every time I heard we’d agreed terms with a player. 😬

Reports saying we've made an opening offer of about £60m for Toney. If so Ratcliffe is clearly in the driving seat.

Branthwaite is the right signing at this stage. there could be potentially players out there with a higher ceiling, in Yoro, but rumours of Madrid, PSG interested in him. Get branthwaite now before anyone has chance. he improves this side massively.
hes tall, quickk, good on the ball, strong. a perfect player for the future.
in years gone by we would have aimed at the "yoro" only to miss out on them, missed the "branthwaite" and ended up with a lesser player than both costing more money
i can see this deal getting made for 50ish mil

Toney is a great option to keep pushing Rasmus and he would be more reliable than taking a punt on another young forward from overseas. CF is a must signing. if they can make Branthwaite and Toney their early signing what a fantastic statement. 2 players at a good age, with prem experience who can actually play and improve the side. they can then focus on shifting players and making a decent signing in CM. i think this club is right for Toney too as he will have the opinion he could start over Rasmus, unlike moving to Arsenal, Liverpoool, possibly chelsea. if he did go to chelsea he would improve them so its best to get the head start on them

£70m. Fuck off. Do we never learn? Outrageous price, English tax, better out there. Make it £40m or walk.

Didn’t do great after coming back Toney. Probably made the England squad on the basis he’s an outstanding penalty taker. Seems a high price tag be the quality of the player.
You’d imagine if Arsenal are genuinely going to come in for him, he’d choose them.

£60m for Toney is way too much when you consider he's 28, spent most of his career in the lower leagues, and his contract expires next summer. It seems like we learnt very little from the Mount deal last summer. Should have offered £40m. And if Arsenal or Newcastle want to pay a lot higher then let them. There are other options out there like Zirzkee, David, Guirassy etc. And end of the day we are buying a back-up striker because Hojlund is going to be even better next season.
And £70-£80m for Branthwaite is far too much. £50m should be the limit and that is a good price for him. We're in pole position as we've already agreed terms.
The way things are going £70m for Branthwaite, £60m for Toney....that isn't going to leave much left over for a top quality CDM (which should have really been a priority given the difference Casemiro made in his 1st season and the impact his decline in form had in his 2nd season).
And it seems like we are making the same mistake as last season-overspending early in the window in a rush to get players in before pre-season (which Erik has made clear is his preference). And fixating on targets so that selling clubs realize they can demand high transfer fees and refuse to budget and after a few offers we will eventually cave and pay up.
That then puts us in a position where we need to sell players to balance the books and then sell even more players to fund any further spending and this summer realistically we are going to get £40m for Greenwood, maybe £10-£20m for Casemiro, £5-£10m for Eriksen and perhaps £10m for Pellistri and that isn't going to be enough.
