Apples and oranges. Under erik we had our worst domestic season in over 20 years. Southgate is Englands most successful manager in 60 years. Just the fact you’re comparing the two kind of validates my point lol. Most successful? What's he won? All the other managers since 66 won exactly the same amount of tournaments he has. He's just had more cracks at it and still failed. He’s taken a team that was knocked out by Iceland and is now in his 2nd final after a 55 year drought. He’s our most successful manager since 66 no matter how you spin it and is 90 mins away from potentially delivering a trophy.

Otherwise he's Arteta, with less trophies and shitter football.

It’s a completely different side populated by some of the most talented young footballers in England’s history. That side in 2016 was abject. 2. Getting to finals is not a measure of success - it is expected, considering the talent at his disposal. 3. By your logic, Eric, having won 2 finals he’s been in, should be getting a 5 year contract rather than the one year extension he’s been given. 4. Southgate is a pathetically boring manager who has gotten results in spite of his ineptitude, rather than merit. Like I said, with this squad he’s got, he can and should be doing IMMENSELY better.

Again comparing Ten Hag to southgate is genuinely mental. We just had our worst domestic season in over two decades. As for the side in 2016 being different to his current one yeh obviously. But then the side he got to a World Cup semi with in 2018 is also completely different to this current side. You can argue all day about style but at the end of the day Southgate has got results with different players, different systems in different tournaments.

The squad he inherited, nobody expected to make any waves going into the 2018 World Cup.
However the quality of the squad since then has improved massively. Either through the players from 2018 kicking on and improving, or new, better players coming in. You’d expect this team to be doing well now. Justifiably amongst the favourites before the tournament.
I think if the argument is don’t be giving England grief all tournament, then jump on the bandwagon when there’s a final to be played, then that’s fair.
If it’s more that everyone here who is from England should be supporting England then that’s not really fair I don’t think. United fans have never really had a good relationship with England, certainly not in my lifetime. Would need someone else to speak on what it was like prior to the mid 80’s.
Either way, please don’t start a fucking ruck on here over this, it’s not worth it.

I think this is the weakest International scene in many a moon. Other than Spain most of the big nations are bang average. England will never have a better opportunity to win something. The Dutch played like Stoke the other night and their best player is a CB. Tells you everything.
