For the most part Southgate has just continued the grand tradition of getting knocked out by the first big team he comes up against in the competition. Italy Croatia France and quite likely Spain tonight. The difference with his predecessors is he usually gets lucky with the draw and avoids the big teams early in the competition. He’s also made us better at penalties which is something.

If he beats Spain tonight then he will deservedly get credit and set himself above all his predecessors bar Ramsey. But if he loses the final and quits he will just be a nearly man.
