The Sun:
“Rio was England’s best player. He made the fewest mistakes and was the one player to come out of it with a lot of credit. He was excellent.
“They nominated Terry for the team of the tournament but how he got in front of Rio with the performance level he produced is beyond me.
“Rio can be very easy-going and sometimes his concentration lapses in games.
“But in the World Cup, and when it comes to the big stuff, he has shown he can perform.
“I honestly thought he was England’s best and most consistent player. I don’t think anyone came near him.”

He has got a very good point. I donno how Terry got in that team in general, he showed how uncomfortable he can get under pressure during the world cup.

Yeh I rate Terry, but Rio was better than him this tournament. I love it when Fergie comes out with statements like this. "Fuck you England, MY player is by far the best one you've got"

England defence without Rio & Neville= shockingly bad. Rio was our best defender, Hargreaves the best in midfield although i think Carrick would have been should he have been played more.

Terry showed hes very average, as did Lampard, I wouldnt say Rio was the BEST though, I think we were spurred on by Lennon when he came on, he produced inspiration which was important and without him we could have jut been slow and dull the whole way through, to be honest it didnt take much to be England best player at the WC we all under performed, badly

On the big stage, Rio has never been found wanting, that's why he cost so much. He was Englands best defender in 2002 and again this summer, lets hope he keeps it going for us this year. Him and Brown or Vidic with VDS behind them looks a great backline. Terry's a great header of the ball and for Chelsea his desire to win is fantastic, but he looked VERY average in the world cup.

Very average If Terry is average I'll have 4 average defenders at my club like him. Bar the definate goal he stopped on the line when Rio failed to clear a header under pressure (if you could call it pressure, Rio looked like he was wearing diving boots at the time) and numerous other immense tackles on what was the WORLD stage yeah id say he was average......NOT On the big stage, Rio has never been found wanting, that's why he cost so much. Easily the most consistently good player we had.

Come on Ned are you honestly saying that Terry was immense throughout the world cup? England didn't have one player (apart from Hargreaves in one game) who fell into that category. I didn't say he wasn't a great player, I just said he had a poor tournament considering people were hailing him as the best defender in the world.

Never said he was Immense but the criticism he has receieved on here is biased in my opinon. John Terry is up there with Rio as one of the best Centre Halves in the World without a question of a doubt. I say this after already being hit with a dive and my reputation being marred but I'll keep saying it till it's down to zero to get my point across, or I might quit now cos he's a chavvy mush from Chavsville tennessee Come on Ned are you honestly saying that Terry was immense throughout the world cup? For me Rio edged Terry in the WC because of some of the mistakes Terry made, whereas Rio was faultless. Terry got lucky with other covering for him a lot of the time.

Fergie is right about Rio being the most consistent, as he is also right about Rio's easy going demeanor leading to lapses in defense. However we didn't see those lapses in his England performances and he was very solid at the back (along with Nev of course) while not playing like a player under pressure. I think Terry didn't do poorly, and his blocked shot saved England from being embarrassed by being a goal down to T&T early on. Looking at England's run in the WC it's easy to see that Rio stood out in defense, not as the flashy defender who was tackling and blocking shots but one who kept the defense looking calm and collected.
