No disrespect to Wigan or Reading, but surely those games at OT over the Xmas period would provide the ideal opportunity for him to get match practice in? Yeah they will, but will those be enough or will be have to give him more games?

I don't think he'll be ready to have a go against the big boys until February. Best for him to work his way back into first team football, I think.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes striker Alan Smith is ready for regular first team action. The 26-year-old striker made an astonishing return to the training ground in pre-season following his horrific leg and ankle break suffered at Liverpool last February.
However, his comeback hit the buffers at Southend in early November in the Carling Cup and Everton have been linked with a move for the blond bombshell after Cardiff made inquiries about a loan agreement for him.
But having snubbed a move to Goodison, Ferguson is ready to welcome back Smith into the senior picture again soon.
"Alan is doing great. There has been a tremendous improvement over the last month," said Sir Alex.
"We have put him on a speed programme. There was an immediate effect with that. He is not far away now.
"I wanted to take him down to West Ham last week but he didn't want to go because he wanted to stay behind and train on his own. I applaud that decision.
"Great credit to the lad for that because training on your own is never easy but he knows his programme and he is working at that.
"He didn't want to go to Villa with us either because he wanted to stay and train again. Full marks to him.
"He did right thing not going out on loan. He could have gone and played games and not been 100 per cent.
"We needed to work on his speed. He has taken to the programme and is getting better and better."

Thats great news! I've always loved Smithy, i really hope he gets back into the team and gets some matches. He is a very good player, good finisher and a real fighter for the team. Can't wait to see him on the field again.

Saha out for two weeks
Louis Saha could be out for a fortnight after suffering a groin injury during the New Year’s Day clash against Newcastle.
United drew the match 2-2, but Saha was forced off after half an hour of the clash at St James’ Park.
The United boss confirmed: "It's a groin injury, so it could be a couple of weeks. But, who knows? We will assess it properly tomorrow [Tuesday].
"The timing of it [during the match] was unfortunate for us, but I thought Ji-sung Park did well when he came on."
Fortunately, the Reds have Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back to full fitness and the arrival of Henrik Larsson, who is elligible to make his debut in the FA Cup against Aston Villa this weekend, is a timely signing.

Well at least with Saha out it will give Smith a chance to come back into the squad a bit, and now we'll see some of Larsson and more of Ole. But I hope Saha gets back as quickly as possible.

At least we seemingly have cover. A few weeks out might do him good too... who knows.

Shouldn't be a problem we have cover and maybe this means a starting role for Larsson which could be beneficial (sp) to him hopefully he could get a couple against villa, will be good to have some competition for places when Saha comes back

What an irritating injury this must be, he was rested the last 2 games with this one in mind to make his come back, Fergie must have been delighted with getting results without him and being able to bring him back against Newcastle, then he's off after about 20 minutes Hope is doesn't trigger another load of injuries for him, he's been unlucky.

Indeed. Fingers crossed, touch wood and all those other saying that hopefully scare bad luck away, that he recovers quickly and fully. Doesnt seem too bad, now Ole can continue his good form and Larsson can get a run too. Roon seems to work w/ ole pretty well too, and Smithy and Rossi might get a few mins soon.
Positive thinking!

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Louis Saha should be fit to face Aston Villa in next weekend's Premiership meeting at Old Trafford.
The French striker suffered a groin injury and had to be substituted in the first half of Monday's draw at Newcastle, but scans have subsequently shown the injury to be nothing too serious.
Sir Alex told his weekly press conference: "Louis should be back in training next week and available for the game on Saturday. He went for a scan on the groin injury he picked up against Newcastle and it was only a small problem."
The news is a timely boost for the 28-year-old, who has been in superb goalscoring form for United this season in the absence of the injury problems which had previously plagued his Old Trafford career.

Brilliant news. Saha is a special striker whose impact cant be reproduced by anyone on our team.
