DOUBLE BLOW FOR BENFICA By Francisco Acedo - Created on 24 Sep 2006Rui Costa and Nuno Assis have been ruled out of Benfica's UEFA Champions League match with Manchester United on Tuesday. The clubs go head-to-head in the second match of Group F with United anxious to avenge last season's exit from the competition at the hands of the same opponents. The Estadio da Luz side have been boosted by the recovery of centre back Ricardo Rocha, but will be without their experienced pair of attacking midfielders. Coach Fernando Santos has Kostas Katsouranis, Georgios Karagounis and Armando Petit (pictured) at his disposal as replacements, but could also opt to change his system. FC Copenhagen held the Portuguese outfit to a disappointing 0-0 draw in their opening match, so the fixture has taken on added importance. ----------------------------- Nice to see we're not the only ones with injuries. After a shocking display there last season I would hope we can only play better and as others have said get a bit of revenge. I think it will be tight but I'll go 2-1 united.

I'm hoping for something like 4-0 to United. It'd be nice to show that we're a changed team from the dissapointing United of CL last year.

1 - 0 against Tottenham 3 - 2 against Celtic 0 - 1 against Arsenal 1 - 1 against Reading…..
I and RY and Redom have touched on the fact that we’ve gradually gotten worse as the fixtures have gone on. I don’t think away to Benfica will be easy. I’m hopeful of revenge.
What channel is it on, does anybody know, probably ITV, right?
I’d of liked to have seen Ronaldo and Giggs on the wings with Scholes and Carrick in the middle, Gabby at left back and Vidic partnering Rio going in to the game. I’d feel a lot more confident.

I'm hoping for something like 4-0 to United. It'd be nice to show that we're a changed team from the disappointing United of CL last year. Our form as of late wouldn't support a 4-0 win over Benfica though I'd sure like us to do that well. What I find disappointing is that our first match it looked like whatever issues there were in the midfield and defense were sorted and flowing football was going to be seen more often, but the past couple of matches we looked shaky defensively and the creativity isn't as sharp as we saw early on. I really hope that these are just minor issues that won't be recurring throughout the rest of the campaign.

They must know they've been getting worse and hopefully they'll go out and change all that against Benfica otherwise they'll be in for a long night and yeah it's on ITV1 on tuesday

We need to get an early goal again, but this time, capitalise on it. Just keep attacking them, keep taking chances. Ronaldo likes to be seen on the world stage, so he'll show up...and both Saha and Rooney are going to want to leave their mark on this competition. Already we've scored as many goals as we did throughout the entire competition last year, we just need to keep it up.
2-1 United.

For this kind of game form isn't really a factor, especially with the motivation carried from last season. They too have motivation with hating Ronaldo as he came from Sporting..
They also miss Rui Costa which is a huge loss, i think Saha will come back into the side with a good game & Ronaldo will show his maturiy after he gave it the finger last season...
3-1 to United.

Well we'll agree to disagree. I think it will be about form because we need to come at them with solid attacking and not that desperate kind of attack which eventually runs out of steam. It's certainly great to be motivated and all concerned will be I'm sure, but so long as that motivation is focused on making good use of possesion to create chances then we can keep Benfica on their heels and get the win.

The players are yapping so i'm predicting a disappointing 1-0 to Benfica.

i think we will show a solid performance, but benfica are dangerous as they knocked out liverpool and united last season, but i think we will get 3 with VDS getting a clean sheet.

This will be the most difficult away fixture of the group stages so to come away from it without defeat will be satisfying although all three points is possible and I would love to get some revenge over Benfica.
I'd love Rooney to get on the scoresheet just to get going again and I wouldn't put it past Ronnie putting in a top performance. They are giving 50/1 on United winning 2-1 and Ronaldo being first scorer with BetFred, that's very possible and I may have a poach at that.

Benfica have been doing really bad so far in the start of their season, after 3 or 4 games they're in the bottom half of the table. Without Rui Costa, I really think our lads will bounce back very well.
