ALEX FERGUSON hailed his youngsters after they gave Roma a real scare.
United kids Jonny Evans, Danny Simpson, Chris Eagles and scorer Gerard Pique shone.
Fergie said: “There were young players out there tonight who I will not be afraid to put in the first team again because I know they have the temperament and ability to perform at this level.
“I was very pleased with a lot of what I saw. We gave the ball away too much in the second half but that was due mainly to inexperience.”
Pique headed United into a first-half lead before Roma’s Brazilian ace Mancini levelled with 19 minutes left.
Wayne Rooney — who has just returned from injury — was captain for the night but was subbed towards the end to save him for Sunday’s clash with Liverpool.
Fergie added: “Rooney did well, he enjoyed himself and I think we gave him just enough time out there.
"He certainly looked fresh. He has got enough football behind him now after his recent injury setback and he will be ready for Sunday.”
England ace Rooney added: “I have missed enough games this season through injury to be sitting out another one, so I want to play all the games we are involved in.
“It was good to get a run-out. A lot of the players stayed at home, so it was a good chance for some of the young players.”

Saha was turd last night, complete turd. It's got to the point where it pain's me to see him in a United shirt. He's become as lazy has Van NistleHorse at the end.

Good result ,This give the youngsters a lot of confidence and hopefully some playing time. Simmo did well , Evans lacked experience. Eagles was a average rather a bit disappointing. Pique was the excellent Dong was disappointing as usual. Rooney looked sharp , great captain. Saha was poor , he isn't fit. was running around like headless chicken. Should have scored after brilliant interplay with Rooney. Nani - What a players , should have sealed it. Pretty content , but I wanted 18. Possible Opponents Schalke/Celtic/Olympiacos/Lyon/Fenerbahçe. Pretty good.

I don't blame Saha for not scoring that opportunity that came his way, the 'keeper was off his line pretty quickly so I'd put it down to top keeping rather than poor finishing.

Saha's not fit, you can see it when he runs, he's scared to go full pelt.
Eagles is wank. Get rid.
Dong didn;t look awful to be fair. Won a few headers and showed a nice touch for Eagles for the penalty shout.

Saha was ok, better last night than he has been Still not firing on all cylinders but wouldn't fault him for effort last night. Wes was poor when he came on. He's been great so far this season but not at the pace at all. I hope this contract issue isn't starting to affect him.

^^ agree that Wes had a shocker last night when he came on, really looked out of sorts. Was a decent performance from us but got frustrated with our mindset in the second half as I expected a real effort considering they were our second string and are trying to make a mark, a bunch of them looked pretty lazy at times.

Agreed, technically he's sound, he can do the difficult stuff, but he can't make a simple ten yard forward pass. And the fact he was getting bundled off the ball by Italians, who've never been physically strong just doesn't bode well for him in England. He'd be a top player in say France or Holland.

Wonderful display by the young lads. A draw against a top flight Italian team on a European night away is a fabulous result, keeping in mind the extravagant changes employed by SAF for the game.
Sheasy had a brilliant game.It was a pity though that he had to limp off with that strain, but he well proved his worth the United squad for the time he was there on the pitch.
Brown, though played only for a little time, seemed highly unsettled and indecisive.Very unbecoming of an individual who has had regular starts for the team throughout the season.
From the young brigade, Simpson I thought had a good game.
Pique was fabulous.Apart from that one glitch where he let the ball through, which luckily didn't result in a goal, as Totti was ruled outside, he had a really good game. Not to mention the goal he scored.
Eagles is a good lad, but he needs to put on more weight lol. He needs to add a more physical dimension to his game if he wishes to be a regular in the United starting line up. Evans was good as well.
A good night on the road for the young guns who sorely disappointed against Coventry in the Carling Cup.
Saha had a good game too.He seemed to be getting the much needed pitch time, and looked flashes of the Saha of last season. It would've been great though if he could've scored that second goal for the winner.
Rooney, well he had probably the most easiest game of his life.He had ample time to do what he wanted, as he wanted, and at the pace he wanted.
Over all, apart from a few defensive glitches, which thankfully didn't prove to be too costly, a good game.
Looking forward to the Scouse bashing on sunday now.
