I ain't got anyone to blame, maybe Rooney for his inconsistency in front of goal. Anyone see how he missed a fantastic chance to score in the first half? I'm not going to blame Rooney for the defeat but he is DEFINATELY going downhill, no doubt about it. Ok, we never got a penalty but we should have scored nevertheless. Fergies tactics have to be questioned at times too, why wasn't Park in the starting line-up? surely he could have rested Ronaldo or Nani and give the underated Park a starting place. And i guess this is the end of it for Saha, get him out of here, dammit FORCE clubs to buy him or give clubs money to take him!!! I'm fuming right now, Portsmouths tactics didn't help at all and our victory against Arsenal didn't serve for anything. Park, Anderson and Carrick and not forgetting Fletcher got us here, yet Fergie makes some stupid changements and look where we end up. Treble??? KISS MY ASS!!! No offence here mate, but i totally disagree... You can't make Rooney the scapegoat for this defeat, and to say that Wayne is 'definitely going downhill' is just barmy, he was the best thing since sliced bread recently with his two goal performance at St.James' Park. It's easy with hindsight to say that Fergie should have started Park, but do you really think he would have made a dramatic difference for us in the game, the way it was going? I think not. You say Portsmouth's tactics didn't help at all, but Pompey's tactics aren't meant to help us! Fergie's changes didn't help us at all? Well, you may be right...

Been long time since I've seen a game like that but hey thats the way it goes, you just kinda knew after about 20 mins that it wasn't going to be our day. We just need to forget about it and get on with winning this league now. I feel a hell of a lot better after Arse dropping 2 points today.

I watched the match again today (I know, I'm a glutton for punishment). Did TK deserve the red card? Though, I guess it doesn't matter now.

I dont think he did deserve it, he was no way the last man! And he pulled away from the challenge at the last minute, i suppose it was a penalty but not a red card...

i dont care how many people slaughter me, its all about opinions but people as much as we love wayne, he really needs to pick up, i mean suspensions or injury the guy misses too many easy chances but bangs in some difficult one, lets get this straight his job is to put the ball in the back of the net, this issue is highlighted cos of his misses and fergie. I'm not going to slaughter you mate, because Wayne shouldn't be immune from any criticism, i'm repeating myself here but it's a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to say Rooney 'really needs to pick up.' Ok, Rooney didn't play particularly well, himself and Anderson lost Baros for Pompey's second goal but it was a collective team effort, so there were other players would were just as much to blame for the defeat. Of course, Wayne Rooney is one of United's most high-profile players, so when he doesn't find the back of the net or puts in an average performance the Rooney-bashing band wagon starts.

Ok I’ve had a few days to get over the result. 1. The ref was shit. 2. It was a definite penalty on Ronaldo. 3. Theirs was a penalty just. 4. It was never a red card, Rooney was last man back on the line and Anderson was also near the play. 5. I've not seen a team defend so deep for a long time. 6. I've not seen a team play every player including their striker behind the halfway line for a long time. 7. I hate the South stand (and the North) 8. We should have scored at least 3 times. 9. I knew we would lose after the Carrick chance and said to my uncle their gonna score. 10. Why did Rooney follow Anderson to the player with the ball for their break, it left Baros alone in the box which caused the penalty, surely he should have known not to get sucked to the ball? It was like watching school football or playing Pro Evo 11. If we beat Bolton on Wednesday the Arsenal result has nearly made up for the loss.

I agree with all points except no. 10. For that the answer is simple, Rooney isn't a natural defender, and as such can be excused for not making the decision a centre back would make.
Anyway, the actual game. From my vantage point in the North Stand (yes, it frustrated the hell out of me when they failed to sing at all, myself and one other bloke were really behind the team), I could tell that a) Ronaldo's was a penalty b) Tomaz did not deserve to be sent off c) We were desprately unlucky.
Michael Carrick should of had man, ball, everything into the net. You just don't try to place a shot when the only thing between you and a goal is 2 yards and a defender who is off balance.
If Cristiano had been involved with exactly the same situation as the penalty, he would have been villified (again) by the press, lambasted by every other fan from us, and generally critizised for buying a penalty. Definately not worth a red card for the 'keeper. Fergie and Queiroz are both up for investigation for their comments, but they said nothing that wasn't true.
If you look at the other Premiership teams who were knocked out, it was by lowerleague opposition. Barnsley and Cardiff outplayed Boro and Chelsea, won in a way the 'magic of the Cup is all about'. However, we, facing a Premiership team, were beaten my the referee. Something is seriously wrong with that.

Eventhough it's hard to wake up in Sunday morning and feel deeply knock about our defeat to Pompey & those F#ck!n@ ref decision , I'm trying not to judge our player. But, it's hard There were so many bad player those night! But, as a Mancunian, I'll keep saying this in my heart : "WE'LL NEVER DIE, WE'LL KEEP RED FLAG FLYING HIGH BECAUSE UNITED WILL NEVER DIE!" -------------------------------------------------------- The frustratting manner of the defeat pissed me off the most - it was as though Pompey had a force field around their goal. I've just been on the official site message board where they are player bashing to the max (no wonder I stick to the RoM!) This is not the time to get on the players back (is there ever a correct time to do so?!) but to show our solidarity and support for the team in what could still end up as a truly outstanding season! Keep the faith! ------------------------------------------------------ I hate it when people say it was only the cup, Why enter it then? If we were to win the cup then we would be celebrating like jumping cows yet when we los people say it's only the cup. ------------------------------------------------------ I hate it when people say it was only the cup, Why enter it then? If we were to win the cup then we would be celebrating like jumping cows yet when we los people say it's only the cup. Not only that but we end up sounding like those bitter Arsenal fans on 606 every time they go out of it. It was a big dissapointment but it's no good making stupid judgements on the players. Everyone will have bad games and sometimes they all arrive at around the same time but all it's usually forgotten about by the next game anyway. -------------------------------------------------------- I get pissed off every time United get beaten. But then again, what can a fans contribute to a team except get behind their back? ---------------------------------------------------------- The frustratting manner of the defeat pissed me off the most - it was as though Pompey had a force field around their goal. This is not the time to get on the players back (is there ever a correct time to do so?!) but to show our solidarity and support for the team in what could still end up as a truly outstanding season! Keep the faith! Mate i used to go on the official messageboard, and i realised something very quick the vast majority of supporters on their are a) only about 12 - 15 yrs old or b) Glory Hunters that cannot make a reasonable statement if theyre lives depended! I got fed up of it about 2 years ago, looking at drivel all day was driving me nuts! Now maybe i was watchin the wrong game on saturday we can blame whoever we like but i would like to put the blame on one person and thats the ref, call me bias, but i felt all of our players maybe bar Hargreaves and Scholes had a good game, and did not put a foot wrong! So why point a finger at players that were clearly trying its just luck wasnt on our side on Saturday. Guess what thats Football theres also another team in the match bar ourselves, that also have the right to win the match! And i have to say well done to pompey, even with Biased Ref, their defence was simply CLASS! no other words each one of them were rocks at the back! Its a sad iditement of fans these days that when a team looses a match they start the flog this player flog that player sack the manager rant! I remember in 1996 we shipped 13 goals (5 Newcastle, 6 Soton, 2 Chelsea (at home)) in three games thats what you call a bad period, and somethings need to be looked at. But not in a cup game when players do give 100% buts fans with their pre-conception that United have a devine right to win every game don't appreciate that! In 1994 i thought like that when we got beat by Villa in the Coca-Coca Cup final! What did we do go on and win the League and FA Cup! We are still in pole position for the league with the gooners slip up and we seem to be going well in Europe! So why not keep the judgements of the players to when the league is over! ------------------------------------------------- Okay,so getting knocked out of the FA CUP makes u angry!!!!come on for gods sake, its only the league and europe which matter. If we dont win the league,or if we get knocked out of europe,i might get angry. But i"m not gonna lose sleep over losing in the carling and fa cup. So the FA cup doesn’t matter now we're out of it? Of course it matters its the biggest domestic cup competition in the world. It's got history, its what so many players and fans dreamt of winning when younger. I'm gutted we won't be able to win it but we'll have to make up for it with the league and CL Of course it matters, i want us to be the most successful English side and for that we need to win domestic trophies as well as European ones. -------------------------------------------------------- Okay,so getting knocked out of the FA CUP makes u angry!!!!come on for gods sake, its only the league and europe which matter. If we dont win the league,or if we get knocked out of europe,i might get angry. But i"m not gonna lose sleep over losing in the carling and fa cup. Yes mate i have to agree with the poster above ^^! Even if i think the individual who started the thread has kind of over reacted ! The FA Cup does mean alot to me as a Fan! Maybe im old fashioned but i still like the build up and the all day coverage it brings, i also like the Semi Finals for some reason, but seeing as they are not being held at Villa Park this year, it takes away a certain amount of excitement! I dunno i just like hearing our fans going bonkers at Villa Park! Its as if we have a lisence to do whatever we want! Its Great! I have to say my finest FA Cup moment was at Villa Park its not Giggsys goal but when we came back from 2-0 down in 2002, and seeing our fans going absoloutely histerical at simply getting into the next round! That is what the FA Cup is about! --------------------------------------------------------- Im sorry to say but the FA Cup has lost a lot of its appeal to big clubs! Its always going to come 3rd to the champs league and the league. To me though i still find it a special competition to win, there has just been so many memorable moments in the cup that I will keep with me until I die! Its not a case of 'Just the fa cup'. Being the team that has won it more than any other club would show how much we love it, the anger that SAF showed after the game showed how important he thought it was! I was really gutted about the defeat and so should every United fan. ------------------------------------------------- That was a tough loss to take considering the amount of chances we had, but it's no time to start bashing the players. Moments like this tend to make some people have a very myopic view of the team and let's not forget we're in a very tight title defense and still strong contenders in Europe. Aussiegraham got it spot on when he said that there seemed to be a force field around the Pompey goal.

I still expected him to realise the danger though. When i play footy and by no means am i near premiership level i know not to get sucked to the ball when there is a man free. Perhaps it was heat the of moment, or wanting to be the one who stopped the breakaway? He was getting pretty frustrated by then so i guess it was more instincts than thinking first.

So he gives Park a chance instead of Ronaldo or Nani, I don't have a problem with that personally but one, Ronaldo was probably our most dangerous player yesterday and two, Fergie does that and then is criticised for resting players and showing lack of respect towards the competition by the media and our fans.

Thought suddenly struck me, anyone else think that this game could be this season's equivalent to the treble year, when Elleray fVcked us over against Liverpool at Anfield? After that game we went on a rampage and won the lot, it'd be nice if we went on a vendetta and demolished all that come before us in CL and Prem...
