Obviously, we all heard about him last season, but he was the main man in midfield the season before also, even with Essien there. The Lyon fans said that they didn't want Essien to go, but would rather he did than Diarra. Diarra was the man doing all the work so that Essien could look as good as he did. Don't get me wrong, Essien's a good player & I'd love him @ United, but Diarra is better. Lyon continued to dominate domestically this season without Essien, winning the league by 15pts, & were very unlucky to lose in the Champions League against Milan the way they did. They have a good squad of players but the main man by far is Diarra & he's just what we need @ United. The only problem is that he'll probably end up @ Madrid, that's why we need to get in there quickly & try to get a deal done.

Carrick is not the midfield terrier we need - he ambles through games. We have missed out on Zokora who fits the bill pefectly. We will not get back to the very top until we sign world class players - not good premiership players who are on the fringe of the international scene. (behind Owen Hargreaves!)

Im not gonna get into it anymore with Carrick. He will become World Class when playing for United. Carrick is not the midfield terrier we need - he ambles through games. Define World Class - Veron? He was till he came to the premiership, we ain't Chelsea we will help players become World Class. Was Ferdinand World Class? Keane? Rooney? Neville? No they became World Class playing for United. We will just have to disagree. He will never be world class

Agree to disagree? No, because he's very very wrong! ;D He's an average player who's over-hyped by the southern press who, for some reason, have taken a liking to him. If he was that good then he'd be starting for England ahead of Hargreaves, but he's not because Eriksson realises we need someone with a bit of substance about them, who'll put themself about a bit. Carrick is a good player in the right formation but not in a 4-4-2 @ United & not the calibre of player we need to take us back up to the top... We will just have to disagree. He will never be world class Im not gonna get into it anymore with Carrick. He will become World Class when playing for United. Carrick is not the midfield terrier we need - he ambles through games. An interesting stat from the Ecuador game (yep I think it’s interesting because I’m sad) - the three central midfielders playing for England that day made a combined total of ONE tackle. They are not going to survive having lightweights in midfield. If he came to United we'd presumably start with him and Scholes in midfield unless we changed the system to accommodate a tackling midfielder also? It would mean that United would have two lightweights in midfield in a 4-4-2, which is what most of us want at United right?
Carrick's job for England in the holding role was presumably to take the ball from the defenders and put tackles in. Some may argue that he's a Pirlo-type playmaking holding midfielder- all very good providing you've a Gattuso running around like a madman.
I just don't see what signing Carrick would solve for United. Yes he's tidy on the ball, but then so is Scholes, so was Keane, but what we need is a busy midfielder who is tidy on the ball- like Keane used to be but was not in his last season at united because of injuries- hence the accommodating formation change by Fergie.

Exactly - a three suspensions a season man

Heres my earlier post Please don't make me laugh saying carrick is a defensive midfielder, he can't tackle his way out of a wet paper bag, if we sign him you can forget about riquelme coming here, the pair together would offer no protection to the back four.
I am glad theres a few more who can see past the hype, martin jol went out and bought edgar davids because his midfield was soft, we would need a ball winner with carrick in the team and at present we havent got one.
