MANCHESTER UNITED have upped their bid for England star Michael Carrick to £14.2million.
Old Trafford chief Alex Ferguson is keen to strengthen his midfield and has identified the Tottenham ace as the man for the job.
An initial £10m bid was rejected earlier this month. But Fergie is determined to get his man and the new offer comes close to the valuation Spurs chief Martin Jol has put on Carrick.
A move to United is believed to appeal to the former West Ham midfielder, who is currently with England in Germany.
United have failed to replace former captain Roy Keane while doubts remain over Paul Scholes after a series of injuries.
Jol is desperate to hold on to Carrick, who played a major role in helping Spurs to fifth spot last term.
Jol said: “We do not want to lose a player like Michael Carrick. He was probably our best midfield player this season, so why should we sell him?
“I’ve told my chairman I want to keep Michael. We are building something, so I can’t do without him.
“Michael has got a contract for another two years, so that is the situation. He owes this club and he is happy here.”
Tottenham paid the Hammers £2.75m for Carrick in 2004.

I suppose that this is an indication that Fergie really is determined to get his man! I just wonder whether this determination is not indicative of the fact that he is a "more affordable" alternative to the likes of Riquelme (yes please) or Diarra (good heavens No). When you look at the United sides of the past two decades, we haven't really had a midfielder in the mould of Carrick (someone who strokes the ball around), except maybe Becks but even he was stuck out on the right flank swinging in cross after cross! He would bring a different dimension to our game and enable us to retain possession better whilst also looking for the incisive pass. The problem we have had recently is that our converted CM's seem to be too preoccupied with not losing the ball thus passing only sideways and backwards, he could rectify this!
Having said all that, I do not think he would be a bad buy, I just think he should not be the only midfield purchase!

Carrick is over priced at 14 million and lacks European experience. I am concerned that he is not a regular Engalnd international and is even behind Owen hargreaves in the pecking order. If United are to return to the very top we neeed proven quality international midfielders who have experience of World, European South American, or African competitive international and club football.
Living in France, I have seen much of Mahamadou Diarra and Zokora. Both of these are outstanding for club and country. They have mobility, read the game well, good in the tackle and move the ball well. Of the two, I would rate Zokora a better option as he would be cheaper - allowing us to move for a playmaker such as Riquelme.
From South America, Mescherano is outstanding as the midfield enforcer.
The fact that we press for Carrick is disturbing because of his comparative lack of ability to those mentioned and possible means we are not after these players.

He's not overpriced at £14m, but if they reject this bid I'd stop there and track Mascherano!

I am watching world class players in the world cup and we are talking about utd buying carrick, i am so cheesed off its untrue, I dont like saying this but Gill in jan said we were buying one possibly two world class players, carrick is fuckin no where near world class, some one should remind those fuckwits at old trafford we are utd and we deserve better than carrick after the shite we have had to watch in our midfield for the last few seasons.

Tom, did you start supporting United in 99? Whatever happens, th eplayers weve had have gone out and given what they can and under the circumstances have done very well, Giggs in center mid? It isnt his position but he got to it and we finished second, so dont call them shite please,
Also in the last day or 2 ive come round to the idea of Carrick and i think he would be great and wouldnt be the only mid players we buy, though as mufcadz said, anymore and we should turn to Mascherano, how do you define world class, he had a great season for Tottenham, doing all he could do with the circumstances, he needs a bigger challenge, that challenge would allow him to be world class, no player will get that status at tttenham, is it his fault hes there? No, but he did a great job there and coming to United would allow him to improve and have better chances, better teamates etc, no where near world class? Were you jumping for joy when we signed Veron? Because he is 'world class' and he is but doesnt go with out game so its better we buy someone who does.
