England coach Sven Goran Eriksson has named a preliminary 23-man squad with four players on stand-by ahead of this summer's World Cup finals in Germany.
The Swede has selected Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing, Tottenham youngster Aaron Lennon and untried rookie Theo Walcott of Arsenal.

What an absolute shambles some of those choices are.
Look at our strike force, an injured Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen who’s not 100%, Peter Crouch who isn’t prolific and isn’t exactly worlds best, and Theo bloody Walcott who’s never played in a premiership game in his life, please. He wouldn’t have been picked had he of not been bought by Arsenal.
Let’s hope our midfield can produce.

I thought Wes might have made it over Campbell. I can’t get over Walcott going, I really can’t. I wouldn’t have minded seeing Defoe there, even though he’s only scored 9 goals this season, he’s a safer bet than Walcott. I also can’t understand why Shaun Wright Phillips isn’t going, yet Lennon is.
Weird squad selection, it really is.

The sooner Sven’s out, the better, right?
I watched all his interview today, twice, and every question he got asked over Walcott, Rooney, the players he hadn’t brought etc, he was slightly stumped on what to say, kept looking down at a piece of paper he must have wrote notes on, he said the same things continually and a lot of time he didn’t even make sense.
I’d totally forgotten about Richardson too, he isn’t going yet Downing is. D’oh!

Where is Wes? Did Sven not see him play this season?
Defoe neds to be in coz Crouch is a a Scouse and Theo Walcott, well, i never seen him play. Nor has Sven apparently

Wes can play in the centre and the right. And is better than Young and Sol in both those positions.
Richardson scores 2 on his debut and gets ignored. Yet Downing does fuck all all and gets in the team.
Hargreaves? Why? Walcott? Why?
It's going to be Crouch and Walcott starting for us. Hell, why not just play David James up front.

Oh agreed. I didn’t believe it when I read we were after Hargreaves, I didn’t want to believe it. And what made it worse was that the writer was saying how he would be the perfect replacement for Keane. (Keels over in hysterics)
