Yeah I'm gutted for him myself.
Ferguson must be annoyed at the medical staff, surely they knew the condition his knee's where in when he done a medical.

Does anyone know the insurance situation in a case like Hargo's? If he's forced to retire surely United would be able to claim some insurance money.

Yes they will be able to claim insurance money on him, but I'm not sure if they are able to claim money on him if he runs out of contract .

@ rax Good points made but can you name realistic targets in the region of 15mil than can slot in right away ? I honestly can't think of anyone else apart from Ireland and in that case, we are better off persisting with Carrick till hopefully a couple of youngsters step up.. Carrick should have been effective in a 3 man midfield. The same way Seedorf, Pirlo and Kaka worked a treat for Milan. It terms of playing style, Carrick is similar to Pirlo (deep lying playmaker who spreads play). It's all a confidence thing I guess and whether he will eve regain it, am not sure but I believe that Carrick can still do a job against bottom half teams and unless we sign a real quality mid, offloading Carrick is a non starter. Firstly I can see what you're saying about the similarities between Pirlo and Carrick, as I said I thought he was the perfect signing a few years back. But a drop in confidence should last a few weeks, sometimes a few months. When it's for a full season it only says one thing to me, that he can no longer handle it. I agree with you on one thing though. There's no-one out there who we could get for <£17M who would slot right in to our first team. Where I disagree is on the comparison, because it would not be a like for like swap. Fergie showed us last season that Carrick is definitely not a guaranteed first teamer. He's a squad player, and in my eyes often an inadequate substitute. There were times last season when Gibson came off the bench ahead of him, which is why I said they were on par right now. No we couldn't get a starter for £17M but we could probably get another squad player like Carrick. Would we want one though? No we certainly wouldn't, so we'd have to spend some. I'd say sell him for as much as possible and use the money to help buy someone better for around £20-30M. EDIT: Just read the story posted by ID. I think it's bullshit that people keep harping on about his performance against Barca. Yes he was shit, but then so was the rest of the team. But he was one of the few players who had reason not to feel too disheartened, that being he was up against the 2 best central midfielders on the planet, and they're ahead by a couple of million country miles. It's tripe like this that does screw a player's head up.
