So you don't like Richardson? I like the summer without league football because it's nice to hear who's signing, who's leaving etc. plus the build up to the next season is nice as well. There's plenty of other ways to be entertained while the summer break is on, so get to it!

I think it's pretty clear to everyone now that the threat of Iraq to its neighbors, their supposed stockpile of weapons of mass destruction and support of terrorist groups like Al Qaeda were red herrings to the true intention of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Conservative think tanks in the US had devised this strategy as an attempt to create a world in which there is only one super power, and with a presence in the region with the majority of the world's oil reserves the US could indeed achieve this. While I don't think the objective was to create a permanent military presence in Iraq I do feel it was to establish an Iraqi government under our control, one that would allow multi-national corporate interests to conduct business unopposed. Now I'm sure the notion of the Bush administration (or any other for that matter) going to war with Russia following the logic for the Iraq invasion is tongue and cheek, because there is no way any military strategist would consider this a remote possibility. From a military perspective invading Iraq was feasible due to the fact Iraq was in essence a contained nation, the proverbial fish in the barrel while Russia, or the North Koreans are quite different. The logic given to the public for the Iraq war was devoid of any logic because the administration itself knew there were no weapons there; they seized the opportunity created by the event of 9/11 to launch a campaign of fear and revenge that would make the attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq justified. Surely no one really thinks we went there to capture Osama, or at least I hope not. Prior to 9/11 the CIA was well aware of Osama, his activities and location so I somehow doubt that the resources to find him suddenly disappeared. The very existence of Osama helps to sustain the constant fear of terrorist reprisal and justify the need to continue the "war on terror". Now I think something has to be put into perspective because prior to the start of WW2 the US military was outdated and under manned as a result of the losses in WW1. While the US has a long history of isolationism, it was understandable because many did not really approve of American lives being lost to fight someone else's war especially a war (WW1) with such high casualties. When WW2 started the US did provide support to the UK in the form of intelligence and weapons that were smuggled in cruise ships. While in recent times the US has not been involved in a military conflict with a nation of equal might, WW2 saw the mobilization of the US into a military machine. In the span of a few years they were able to update the military and recruit a brand new military force capable of sustaining a war on both sides of the world. You mention Pearl Harbor and I'll use it to remind you that most of the Pacific fleet was destroyed yet the US was still able to rebuild quickly enough to launch an effective campaign against Imperial Japan. Surely being able to mobilize against the Nazis and their allies can count as facing an adversary of equal might. We have to also keep in mind that warfare changed dramatically after the invention of nuclear weapons, and wars like the last two world wars are unlikely to be seen again. I certainly don't think any issues between Russia and its European neighbors will be anything that cannot be dealt with diplomatically. Putin and other leader know what is at stake if stability in Europe fails, and Russia knows there is no hope in a prolonged military conflict. You ask "so what are you going to do about this Bush?" I for one hope he does absolutely nothing and leaves the diplomacy for those who have the tact, intelligence and knowledge to handle such situations.

I read a funny counter argument to yours today Sil. It was written by John Richardson on the Football 365 site. He argues that we could be watching TOO much football lol. He uses porn as an analogy which is quite interesting as well.

To be honest John Nicholson is the only thing i read on there, he's funny and passionate about his football. He's a Boro fan who loves Gary Neville lol
